"Mom", I asked quietly. "What am I?"
Mom laughed. "Honey, it's not anything that bad. We're human, not some kind of alien."
Well that's a relief.
Mom continued, "However, we do have abilities that makes us different."
Ok, enough of this. I crossed my arms. "Like what?"
"Well, your father can transform into certain ... things."
Oookkkaaayyy. "Like what?!"
"Other people, some animals."
That's definitely different. "
Wow, okay. What about you?""I can control the elements - earth, fire, water, and wind."
I shook my head. "Nope. Don't buy it. Too out there."
Mom giggled. "It does sound pretty wild, doesn't it? How about I show you." She held out her hand. Right in the middle of her palm, a miniature tornado formed.
I rubbed my eyes and looked again. Yup, still there. " I stared at her and squeaked, "And me?!"
Mom waved her hand and the tornado vanished. "We're pretty sure that you inherited my abilities. Your father told me about the water fountain, and yesterday you kicked up a nice wind."
I blinked. "Those weren't accidents? I actually CAUSED them!"
Mom took a step back. "Calm down honey. You don't want to lose control in here."
I looked at where she was looking. The curtains looked like a ghost was trying to rip them off and the sheets and pillows flew across the room. 'Breathe' I told myself, 'Just breathe.'
Mom came over and put a hand on each shoulder. I felt much calmer, and instantly the wind died down. Mom spoke quietly behind me. "See, this is why you need to go to this school. You need to learn control. Once you can get yourself under control, then it won't be so scary."
"How did you guys know? I never told you about the incidents at school."
Mom hugged me to her. No, but your principals did. When they got to asking too many questions we would move you to a new school. We didn't want anyone else figuring it out before we told you. And I guess, in a way we hoped we would never have to. Sometimes abilities skip a generation or two. But it didn't skip you, so here we are."
I closed my eyes and breathed in her perfume. My mind is whirling and confused, but she's still mom.
"So when do I start this new school," I asked.
"In two weeks," she answered. "I know that isn't long, but we need to get you started as soon as possible. They were generous in giving us this much time to get settled in our new home."
I turned my head and asked, "When did we get a house?"
"Your father had already found it. We just had to wait until the paperwork cleared and our things could be shipped over here."
"So, when are we moving in?"
"We should be able to in a couple of days. Our things are supposed to arrive tomorrow, and then we can start setting in. Does that sound okay?" She looked worried.
I gave her the best smile I could. "Sounds great mom."
I took a deep breath. This will all be okay. This will all be okay. And as we left the room to go shopping for school clothes, I had an epiphany.
*I am not alone anymore!*
