"Do you think it's my fault we grabbed the wrong car and why Newt's mad at me?"
Thomas looked into my eyes, then shook his head.
"No, it's not your fault," he assured me. "There were so many kids calling for help you thought you heard his voice. And Newt, he's just disappointed that Minho wasn't there."
"Yeah, me too," I sighed glumly.
"Hey." Thomas stopped in his tracks and turned his body to face me. "I'm going to talk to Vince and see if we can try again. Because if there is someone that will make my friend happy, it's Minho."
I nodded. I was really glad that he was that determined to get Minho back, and I would follow him anywhere. I smiled up at Thomas, then hugged him. Thomas left me once I arrived, so I helped Frypan with dinner. A lot of people were asking me what happened to my arm, and I had to repeat over and over again what happened to at least twenty people. When I was done eating, I wanted to go find Newt and see if he was in a better mood.
I searched around the entire campsite twice, but there was no sign of him anywhere. Where could he have gone? Did he still need time to calm down? Then, it came to me. I knew exactly where to look. I walked out farther away from everybody and headed to the hillside where the beach was.
Back in Scorch, when I was having a mental breakdown, Newt asked me where I wanted to go. My answer was that I wanted to go to the beach, and he promised to take me there when we were safe. But we never really had the time to do what we wanted, so we're putting that off to the side until Minho is safe.
My hunch was correct when I saw Newt sitting down on the hill in the distance with his knees up to his chest. I went up to him and, without saying a word, sat down by him. We didn't exchange any words as if we had nothing to say. I stared ahead into the seemingly endless ocean that was peacefully splashing on the rocks. Then, Newt's voice broke the silence first.
"How'd you know where I was?" He asked, still not looking at me.
"You weren't in the camp, so I figured you were here," I simply replied.
He nodded. We were quiet again, but I didn't put up with the silence this time. I was waiting to see if he would talk first, but he didn't say a word. Newt just kept staring ahead, probably waiting for me to do the same thing.
"Okay, enough is enough," I said. "I know that today didn't go so well, so something's clearly bothering you, I can see it. Do you want to tell me what's wrong?"
That question finally got him to look at me, his eyes having a hint of sadness, anger and guilt. It honestly crushed me just seeing it. I wanted to lean in and give him a hug, but I didn't know if he was still upset. But he sighed while leaning forward slightly as he let out a puff of air, his wispy hair falling into his eyes.
"Six months ago, we promised to save Minho and everyone that W.I.C.K.E.D. has hurt," he said. "We were going to bring him back safe and sound, happy and alive. But today-"
"We would've seen him if I hadn't screwed up."
"Rosalee." Newt moved his hand to my face and held it gently. "It wasn't your fault. Any one of us could've done it."
"Yeah. But that mistake might make us never see him again since W.I.C.K.E.D. already knows..."
I trailed off because the lump in my throat hurt to talk. Tears started swelling to my eyes, but I forced them back by blinking so many times. I wanted to switch out the conversation, still keeping it on the same subject.
"Thomas said he was going to talk to Vince about trying again-"
"He said no," Newt said, almost as if he were angry.
