It was just Dream's luck that his ex, no, not only ex but ex best friend stood mere inches in front of him, almost as if they had both mutually agreed to forget about it.
He didn't, that much was clear.
But let's take a trip down memory lane.
Dream was currently enrolled in his second year of college studying computer science on the opposite coast of his past high school and childhood home. It was a meager attempt to escape everything that had gone down there, but truthfully, he liked the college.
He lived in a dorm with his roommate who was never home, and always out partying. Not that Dream minded- the silence was nice, and the solitude was welcomed. It was do to this he was a straight A student, and understood the course material for the first time in his education.
The summer was coming up fast- only a week left of finals, and a week afterwards for who knows what. He was initially planning to stay on campus during the summer and take third year prep courses, since he dreaded going home. Dream was ever thankful for the summer, but the summer always made the memories hit the hardest.
He was in the middle of studying for his final when his friends had called him like usual- they had vowed to keep in touch since high school.
"Hey Dream!" Bad, otherwise known as Darryl, piped up with a smile-filled greeting.
"Hey, Bad," Dream responded, a bit more civilly. He hastily erased a sentence from his notes.
"Um, hello?! I'm right here!" Zak, who went by Skeppy, demanded from beside Bad, and Bad scoffed. Dream simply laughed, shaking his head as they switched to facetime, as per tradition.
"Nah. I'm only here for Bad." Dream stood up from his desk, and with it his computer, to settle onto his bed. "What's up?"
"Well, okay, hear me out!" The tall brunette piped out, just as Skeppy stuck his tongue out at the camera. "You know that cabin my parents have up in the forest? It's in New Hampshire. Well, they said no one is using it for two weeks this summer so I may have said I wanted to use it."
Dream tilted his head, shrugging. "So am I invited?"
"Yea, you muffin!"
Skeppy laughed. "We already got a few other people coming from high school."
Dream nodded absently. "What are the dates?"
Bad listed off a set of dates, exactly in a month from now and they collectively hung up to let Dream finish studying.
It never crossed his mind who they invited.
.
Finals week was annoying.
He kept his head low, as if he was an impostor within this crowd of people he hardly interacted with. Dream didn't want any new friends, and frankly not a relationship, much to the disappointment of a girl in freshman year.
People didn't know him, and if they did, they simply acknowledged his presence with a nod. He was the definition of a popular outcast- no one paid him any attention and he wasn't the school laughing stock.
He was pretty sure he could have easily climbed the social ranks if he cared, but in the end he was here for education, not social hour. His friends told him he would regret that mindset in the later years of his life.
In the corner of his eye, he spotted a couple sitting in the courtyard, happily staring into the others face in complete adoration. A smile touched his face, and he turned to his left to whisper about it to-
Oh.
A lonely pang settled on his heart as the realization swarmed back up. He had been doing so well, not thinking about him, and then he went and remembered.
Dream squeezed his eyes shut, and focused on getting to class, instead of the stupid boy who broke his heart.
.
"WOO!" Sapnap hollered in the backseat, pumping his fist. Dream rolled his eyes, sliding in next to him and Skeppy and Bad pivoted in the front seat to make eye contact with him. "What's up dude?"
"I'm fantastic," Dream hummed, letting a smile slip on his face as Darryl pulled out of the parking lot. They had drove all the way from California to pick him up, and to drive up to New Hampshire as a group. The rest of their friends were already there, or making there own trip. "God, it's so good to see you all."
And that was the truth, as he looked at his best friend Nick who had the stupidest look on his face. Bad and Skeppy laughed about something in the front seat, so Dream and Sapnap droned into comfortable conversation.
"How's California?"
"Skip the small talk, Clay, I want to know the juicy 'deets. Anyone catch your fancy?" Sapnap crossed his arms in his seat, raising an eyebrow expectantly.
The blond boy winced, pulling a face. "Yea, right. What about you?"
Nick grumbled. "You're so boooooring."
"And you're any better?" He challenged smoothly, a cold facade consistent.
"Yea! I actually go to parties, hang out with the boys, and all you do is code."
Dream groaned. "That's all you ever talk about. Can we drop Sapnap off at a hotel on the way?" He directed his question to the two up front. Skeppy nodded feverishly.
"That's what I've been saying!"
Dream and Skeppy wheezed and laughed, as Sapnap fake frowned and Bad yelled at them for being rude muffins, and that it wasn't nice to leave your friend stranded in the middle of nowhere. Dream pointed out it wasn't exactly nowhere, and Sapnap would have no trouble finding directions or a way home. Still, his point was vetoed, and Nick got to stay in the car.
It was night time when Bad pulled up a dirt driveway, a grin wild on his face. A lake lay behind the house in front of them, sparkling in the dying sunlight. Tall pines danced in the breeze and fallen leaves and pinecones plagued their steps. Dream left his bags behind to catch up with everyone else, and Bad opened the door in grandeur.
"We've made it!"
Cheers sounded from the kitchen, and footsteps thundered in the hallway as a group of boys met them at the door. Dream recognized a few familiar faces- Wilbur, and Ant were the main ones- as well as a face he didn't recognize in the darkness.
Finally, one last person burst through the door and started mingling with the crowd, coming to a stop in front of him. They wore a cheery smile, and their eyes were bright, but each of those instantly faded once they made eye contact with the blond.
Nick looked over from where he stood, his eyebrows knit in confusion at the two's behavior, and slowly the crowd looked over, suddenly aware of the tension crackling in the air.
"Hey, Dream."
