"it's you. it's always been you."

Start from the beginning

your eyes widened. "oh shit, yeah, that's how the game works," you softly spoke in realization, making everyone laugh.

"you dumb fuck," schlatt chuckled from across the room. "first you can't remember to get cheerios, then you can't remember the rules to truth or dare. what's next?" he took a sip of his coca-cola.

"shut up," you giggled, although his words only made you want to frown. you hadn't noticed that most everybody stopped laughing when schlatt spoke.

"yo schlatt," charlie piped up from the couch. schlatt looked over to him with curious eyes.

   "what's up?" he asked.

"why are you shitty to y/n all the time? like when we all hang out, you just go after her the whole time, but then you turn around and talk about her all the time when she's not there," cason inquired, trying to stand up for you. your eyes widened as you looked at carson with an evident please don't do this look on your face. he just nodded insistently towards you.

"i'm just making jokes, dude. she knows that," schlatt calmly replied, although you could see his hands becoming a bit more fidgety.

"i don't think so, schlatt. have you seen the way she reacts when you dog on her sometimes? she looks like she's on the verge of bursting into tears on the spot," charlie added, his voice becoming a bit tense.

your blood ran cold when charlie spoke. you had told him in confidence how the difficulties with schlatt made you feel, sure he wouldn't tell a soul. you knew it was out of frustration, but you couldn't help but be a little upset.

"i'm uh- i think i'm gonna head to bed for the night. goodnight guys," you quickly stood up and walked towards the stairs with a small wave to everyone, not bothering to look at the brunette sitting on the floor, staring at you with wide eyes.

after quickly walking up the stairs, you practically ran to your room and jumped on the bed, shutting the door to give yourself some privacy. you curled up on the soft mattress with a heavy sigh. your eyes watered from the stress of the event you had just witnessed, but you didn't let any tears fall.

after a few moments, you got up and grabbed some pajamas from your suitcase and quickly changed into them. a soft knock came upon your door as you were brushing your hair. "who is it?" you asked, hoping it wasn't who your mind was telling you.

"it's charlie," the familiar voice softly responded. you sighed in relief and opened the door.

"what did you need?" you asked.

"i wanted to apologize," he responded. you slightly cocked your head to the side in confusion before gesturing to the rest of the room.

"come on in, i guess." charlie obliged and sat on the edge of your bed while you shut the door and sat beside him.

"i want to apologize for what i did down there. i kinda betrayed your trust," he apologetically spoke.

"it's alright, charlie. i could tell it came from a place of frustration, not a place of being a bad friend," you reassuringly replied.

"still, it wasn't my place to say all that."

"it's good that you know that, but it's really okay. i'm not mad at you."

"you sure? you have every right to be,"

"i'm sure," you replied with a smile.

charlie smiled back before yawning quietly. "i think it's time for me to go to bed too," he chuckled, you following.
