He seems startled, like he didn't notice you were there. "Oh, Y/N. Good to see you." He takes his glasses off to wipe some orange stuff off the lenses.
"So what's all..." You gesture to the colourful stuff.
He looks down at his shirt and hoodie and groans. "Ugh, it's paint. That Gym is full of paint."
Paint, huh? Well I guess the Gym Leader there is a famous Unovan artist.
You remember Lenora asking you to tell Cheren about the robbery.
"Hey, Cheren-"
He puts his glasses back on. "Sorry Y/N, I really gotta go clean up. I'll see you later, okay?" He runs off without letting you finish.
Well then.
You can't really blame him though. Ever since the three of you were kids, Cheren always hated getting dirty. He feels like people won't take him seriously if he isn't presentable.
It especially annoys him if his glasses are dirty, but that's more because he can't see.
Not looking forward to also being covered in paint, you step into the Gym.
After about an hour, you make it to the Gym Leader's room.
"Hello there, little trainer," he says. He has curly brown hair and green and pink clothing, and he's facing a canvas when you walk in.
On the canvas is a half-completed painting of a forest scene, maybe Pinwheel forest. Even though it's not finished, it looks really good, as if you're looking at a window with the forest on the other side.
"Did you paint that?" you ask, even though it's obvious who painted it.
He nods, tapping his paintbrush against his chin. "I suppose you're here for a battle." He sets the brush down, as well as a small palette with different shades of green and blue. He turns around. "My name's Burgh. I specialize in bug-type Pokémon."
You pull out Servine's Pokéball.
"Ooh, right to the point, huh? That kid with the glasses was just like that." He tosses a Pokéball elegantly. "Go, Leavanny!"
"Woo!" A green and yellow Pokémon a few heads shorter than Burgh comes out of the Pokéball. It has leaf-like arms and looks like it's wearing a tailcoat made of leaves.
"Go, Servine!"
Sevine comes out of its Pokéball with a squeal.
"Using a grass-type, hm? Sounds like a death wish to me! Leavany, use Bug Bite!"
a) "Dodge it!"
b) "Use Vine Whip!"
a) "Servine, dodge it!" you call.
Just as Leavanny comes crashing in, using its arms like mandibles, Servine leaps out of the way, unscathed.
b) "Servine, use Vine Whip!"
Servine slips its vines out from its collar, but gets rammed by Leavanny before it can attack.
"Hmm, the first move says a lot about a trainer," Burgh says. "Now, Razor Leaf!"
Leavanny sends out a storm of leaves that graze and cut Servine.
It's not very effective.
Servine tackles Leavanny to the ground, then whacks it with its tail.
Geez, aggressive.
Then Leavanny shoots a String Shot from its mouth, wrapping Servine in silk strings and lowering its speed.
"Very good Leavanny! Let's finish this off with Bug Bite!"
a) Get Servine to break the strings with Razor Leaf.
b) Get Servine to try to wiggle out of the strings.
a) "Servine! Use Razor Leaf on the strings!"
"Vine!" Servine squeals and releases a flurry of sharp leaves, cutting the string.
b) "Servine, quick, try to wiggle out of the string."
Servine throws itself out of the way of Leavanny's attack and squirms out of the string bundle like a snake.
Once it's free, Servine finishes the battle off with a Vine Whip.
You let out a long sigh. That was a tough battle, especially since you had the type disadvantage.
Burgh returns his Leavanny to its Pokéball.
"Magnificent. Simply magnificent." He claps his hands together. "What a masterpiece of a battle! I'm quite inspired!" He digs through a pile of trunks and suitcases at the back of the room until he finds the Gym Badge.
You take it from him, your fingers covered in paint.
The Gym's puzzle had been a maze.
Made
Of
PAINT.
You had to traverse walls literally made of paint and if you went the wrong way, well guess what. You got splattered. It was the worst thing ever.
Frankly, it looks like a Galarian Rapidash threw up on you.
You take the Insect Badge and go, ready to find N.
Wait. Hold on.
You look down at your paint-covered self. You should probably take a shower first.
It's getting late anyways, so maybe we'll leave seeing N for tomorrow.
