Chapter 7. A new start Part 2

Start from the beginning

I sighed while walking into the restaurant. The receptionist of the restaurant led us straight to a private room. I was glad that no one would see us because I didn't want people to recognize me. Briac motioned me to take a seat, then said, "You can order whatever you like, Zach. I will treat you today for helping me." I nodded at Briac, then ordered something light. I had never been a big eater. Briac frowned while looking at my salad, but he didn't make any remarks. We had small talk while eating. I didn't complain when Briac paid for my food because I was sure that I had just earned him high praise. We went back to the headquarter after enjoying the weather for a bit. I decided to work on Katherine's website after returning to my desk. I could hear Briac tapping away on his computer and calling modeling agencies to hire people.

It was soon time to leave. I received a text message from the director of the youth center, where I had volunteered before the moment I walked out of the Marquis building. The director was asking me to assist a few college students. It seemed like these students needed help in drawing images of buildings. I sent the director a text, then drove straight to the youth center. The kids that already knew me ran to me when they noticed me. I hugged them all one by one, then went to meet the director. The director introduced me to the college students, then went back to his office.

The students instantly bombarded me with questions and requests. It took me some time to explain to them that they needed to do their projects by themselves. I was there just to guide them. The students got disappointed, but they still agreed to follow my instructions. I was tired by the time I reached home. I had dinner, took a shower, then went to bed. I dozed off within minutes. I woke up when I heard a knock on my bedroom door. Zavier walked into my room before I could invite him in. "I was expecting you today, Zach. You promised to do my bookkeeping, remember?" uttered Zavier while looking in anger at me. I leaned against the headboard of my bed, then frowned at Zavier. Zavier suddenly remembered that I also had a busy life. He quickly apologized to me by saying, "I'm sorry, Zach. I didn't mean to put pressure on you. You can come by whenever you like."

I nodded, then responded to Zavier with, "It's okay, Zavier. I'll come by tomorrow after work." Zavier smiled at me while closing the door behind him. I shook my head while thinking about Zavier. It would be hard to fall asleep for me again. I decided to finish Katherine's website while I was awake. I sent her a polished result first thing in the morning. Zavier didn't come out to have breakfast with me that morning. I packed my lunch, then left for work. Emma greeted me with a hug, then asked me, "Did you have a great night, Zach?" She burst out laughing when she heard me say, "Yes, Emma. It was the best night of my life."

I made my way to the second floor after having a chat with Emma. A young woman walked up to me when I reached my workspace. She greeted me with, "Good morning, Mr. Joseph," then added while stretching her hand out to me, "I'm Marla Wallace. I'm Mr. Miller's assistant. My apologies for not welcoming you yesterday. I had to attend some meetings in Mr. Miller's stead. The section chief wants to meet you now. Follow me, please." I shook Marla's hand, then responded to her with, "Lead the way, ma'am." Marla giggled when she heard me call her, ma'am. Marla led me to Mr. Miller's office, then knocked on the door. Mr. Miller immediately responded with, "You may come in, Marla." Marla opened the door while smiling at me. I could see that she was fond of her boss.

The first thing that I noticed when I stepped into Mr. Miller's office was all the family photos on the walls. Mr. Miller's office looked more like a study than a workspace. The man himself was in his mid-fifties and had a friendly demeanor. He welcomed me with a hug instead of a handshake. Marla smiled at me, then whispered, "Just indulge him for now, Zach." I chuckled when I heard Mr. Miller say, "Your future will be bright, Zachariel Joseph." "Is this man a walking fortune cookie," I asked myself while showing Mr. Miller my gratitude. Mr. Miller led me to his desk, then uttered while taking a seat, "Alexei told me that he entrusted you with the Vincent wine brewery project. Do you need help in figuring out things?"
