Jett whipped her head around and shot at a crank. She slammed the common room door shut and put all her weight against it.
"He's a lost cause." Josephine told Jett, motioning to Kyle who had been shot at.
"We aren't leaving him." Jett snapped, pushing harder against the door. "Radar come help me!"
Radar ran from across the room and slammed his body against the door that the cranks tried pushing down.
Kyle was out cold, his breaths slow and his face pale from the bleeding wound.
Josephine kept her hands on the gunshot on the boys shoulder. "I don't care if he's your brother or a friend, we need to move or we all end up like him!"
Jett hesitated before looking at Radar for an answer and he nodded. Finally,
Jett was able to think of herself instead of someone else. "Fine."Josephine took her hands off of the dying boy and took out her gun. "I'll do it if you can't."
Jett's eyes widened. "You said nothing about killing him-"
"No we will leave him for the cranks." Josephine rolled her eyes. "I'll make it quick."
"I know." Jett said sourly. "You seem like the one to not have any feelings."
Josephine shot Kyle in the head. Her arms fell to her sides and she wipes the excess blood on her blue jeans, still tattered from her crank life.
"You are one heartless person." Jett pushed harder against the door.
"I'm a crank sweetheart." She grinned and Jett felt disgusted.
"So how are we getting out of here?" Radar questioned.
"We shoot our way down." Josephine shrugged. "Me and three other cranks had guns, they are all probably dead now."
"Probably." That remark came from Jett.
"Ready?" Radar looked his friend in the eyes and Jett nodded.
In one big leap, the two of them jumped from the door and open fired at the cranks that destroyed the cabin, the only safe place they had. One crank surprised them by shooting back but didn't hit any of them. It was a death bed of cranks.
"What now?" Josephine asked Jett.
"The passageway." Jett ran down the small hallway and swung the door open.
"Thank god." Stevenson said, in a standing position as if he was about to run out.
"We just about came looking for you." Newt said, hinting a bit of joy in his voice.
Jett smiled at him, but so did Josephine, which made Jett look away.
"Let's go." Stevenson announced and turned to go down the tunnel but the house began to shake.
"What the shuck?" Newt mumbled.
"Do you smell that?" Josephine asked around. "It smells like-"
"Smoke!" Radar gasped. "The cranks set fire to the cabin!"
Just then, as if they hadn't noticed it before, the house began to fill with a thick smoke.
"It's coming from everywhere!" Including the tunnel.
"Right." Stevenson nodded. "Let's move."
Jett, Radar, Newt and Josephine followed Stevenson out of the small room and into the adults room. In the back of the room, a small door lead to a deck outside. Stevenson knocked the knob off with his gun.
Jett then realized she wasn't with her sister. She felt a sudden thrash of worry and regret. She wanted to curl up in a ball but she ran with everyone else, she ran and ran. She wanted to scream and stop but the cabin went ablaze and surviving cranks ran after them. This was the beginning of a life she did not want to live.
