"After you," Bowing lowly, I opened the door to an as-suavely-you're-going-to-get Alex. Slightly wrinkled suit and oddly jelled hair his mother insisted on. But I'm not one to talk, having given up on my frizzy hair, it sat in a messy bun at the back of my head. Which paired with the thrift-ed navy dress, I looked like an indie film protagonist.

"Dumbass." He muttered as he passed through, it's almost like old times.

The Homecoming dance was filled with colored lights and balloons, clumps of students circled around the dance floor with a few daring enough to dance and prove our lack of performing arts. Alex and I awkwardly walked around searching for the rest of the group. Due to a lack of dates, a few members of the decathlon team decided to go as a unit. But, since I'm an impatient bitch who hadn't eaten since noon, I dragged him to the nearest punch table.

Alex sipped his punch, shoulders slightly hunched in discomfort, which lessens after I ruffled his hair. Attempting to smooth his curls back into their slick back position, he rolled his eyes. "Ma took forever to do that."

"Whatever will you do?"

Quickly retaliating he shook out my curly updo. Before I could cuss him out, MJ and Ned approached us. Alex straightened out and I tried to get a piece of hair out of my mouth. Alex and MJ exchanged dry humor-filled dry compliments causing my brow to shoot up. Now I get the suit.

Wanting to give them a little space, I chatted with Ned, Cindy, and Betty. Apparently, we're waiting for Peter and Liz. After a while Ned disappeared, leaving me to converse with the rest of the team. Once Liz arrives, enough commotion occurred that dragged the group's attention to her. Excusing myself to get more punch, I poured the red liquid into the cup, hoping no one had spiked it yet.

"Mind getting me one too?" A voice said over my shoulder.

"Conversing with the help, how daring?" Eyes flickering up to the dark-haired Hispanic boy in a suit, I poured the reddish liquid into the plastic cup. "Where's your date?"

"I didn't bring one, decided to go stag." He smiled, causing a spark of joy to thrum through my chest. But his gaze turns sour as he glanced at Flash coming in with a blond girl through the door. "Flash had other plans."

"He's not into her," I noted, glancing at the so-called couple. "Left dinner early, choosing not to dance to any song with her, even though he loves dancing." Handing Jonathan a cup, I gave him a slight smile, which he returns with one of his own.

Taking a sip out of my glass, I looked over I rim. "Speak of the devil."

"Sup, Foster." Flash greeted with a shit-eating grin. His date abandoned to her group of friends, he clapped Jonathan's shoulder with a grin. "Come on they're playing the Cupid Shuffle."

In the tinted purple light, the rose on Jonathan's cheeks was barely visible. It's better than the bruises usually there. Staring over the room, a sense of calm filled me. Alex looked like he's having a good time as does Jonathan. Finally, I could have peace—
