"Men!" the Alpha called out to the big room filled with muttering men, together as a congregation they were very loud. On the command the room hushed and everyone sat up straighter, their eyes momentarily focused on the Alpha instead of John's daughter.
"Obviously, you've all noticed two things. One, John's daughter Carter has joined us today. The second thing you would have noticed. That strange scent that she is now radiating."
All the men nodded while muttering, quite confused and with their attention back on the Miller girl. Carter shied even further behind her father.
"She is probably the best thing that ever happened to our pack. Men, for those of you who haven't already guessed, Carter is the Rainlander Pine Pack's very own female werewolf."
The room erupted into absolute chaos! There was excitement, disbelief, pride and amazement. Together they all made quite a cacophony of noise, and it was all too much for Carter. She leaned completely on her father, covering her ears and was trying desperately to block it all out.
"Alpha Markcus!" John yelled over the crowd. The Alpha was completely preoccupied with the feeling of the room and great pride to notice.
"Alpha!" John shouted and finally got the Alpha's attention as the Alpha looked over to his good friend and noticed Carter. His eyes widen and his grin faded, the excitement of his pack really was wearing onto him. He hadn't even thought about Carter when he made the announcement about Carter. He didn't think that the next moments in the room could change from a room of 68 men and one frightened little girl, to a room with 68 men and one extremely frightened, very skittish and completely confused small blonde wolf.
"Everyone! Shut up!" Alpha Markcus roared and approached the whimpering pup calmly and slowly. The room was now deadly silent. Any none believer now believed and everyone had eyes on the pup on its hunches. The alpha got down and squatted in front of the blonde wolf, and started to calm her down through their mind link.
"Carter... It's alright now..." He whispered. "There is nothing that is going to hurt you, you are perfectly safe. And the noise has stopped. If you change back in the other room and put on that jacket on the counter top. You can go upstairs into Patrick's room and borrow some more clothes. Then you can go home to your party and friends. Do you remember how to shift back?"
Carter nodded slowly. Alpha Markcus smiles and encouraged her into running into the next room. Carter ran off with her tail between her legs and left the room of men. She left them all in a state of awe.
"That is bloody incredible!" One man yelled and then loud exclamations became a sea of sound.
"Keep it down!" The alpha and John both snapped simultaneously without effect. Thousands of 'Hows?', 'When's?' and 'what's?' flooded the room. The noise was getting quite substantial.
Alpha Markcus yelled at them all again, and the questions stopped flowing and the noise stopped.
"When she leaves and is safely out of earshot, we will continue this meeting. John, call Jocline and have her pick Carter up immediately." The Alpha ordered. John nodded and walked into the next room, pulling out his phone.
Some of the younger wolves were talking quietly between each other. The main idea of the discussion was 'if [they] were the first to shift, did that give them a better chance at getting Carter as a mate?'. Tommy was sitting there on the back of the couch, digging his nails into the cushion.
"Guys, she is thirteen. Shut up." He growled and all of the junior boys shut their mouths as all of the Millers glared. The trio was terrifying.
"Millers!" The Alpha called and Tommy stood up immediately. His younger brother Dale and his other cousin Randy stood up slower and their father, Andrew and his brother Burke were the last to stand.
"Drew, Burke, men, you may sit if you'd like. I'm going to address the terrible trio" The alpha chuckled, Andrew and Burke laughed and Dale and Tom grinned like an idiot.
"As her family, I want you watching over her extra carefully. I want you to be the definition of body guard. To the dot. Keep this lot-" he said motioning to the group of hormonal teenagers, "Away from your cousin until she is ready. Help her out when she needs you and I expect one of you to be close all the time if she isn't with her father or me."
All of the Millers nodded. They had always taken care of their little cousin, but now it was their job and they were happy with that.
"Thomas, I want you to go back to her place and help your aunt with the party tonight."
Tommy nodded in understanding.
"You begin the moment she comes down those stairs." The Alpha stated and Tommy nodded once more. Tommy looked over the rest of the teenagers gathered around the left couch, and gave them a challenging stare, almost daring them to make a move on his barely teenaged cousin. Most of them shied away under pressure, a few then looked to Dale and Randy, who also gave them the terrifying look. However a few just kept the stare, not backing down.
John came back into the room of men.
"Jocline is on her way now, she will be here in a few minutes." He announced to no one in particular. The alpha nodded.
"Your nephews are going to be guarding her from now on." He added. "And Tommy will be going back and staying the night at your place tonight."
"Yes Alpha." John chuckled and turns to his nephews, motioning to the group of adolescents gathered. "Give 'em hell Millers."
All six of the Millers in the room grinned.
"Dad?" Called the small voice of the youngest Miller, as she came down the stairs.
All heads turned in the direction, all trying to see through the door and to the stairs at the little miracle in their midst. John left the room and Tommy was quick to follow.
They re-entered the room flanking little Carter in baggy clothes.
"Thanks, Alpha Markcus.." She said shyly...
"No, Carter... Thank you and happy birthday." He chuckled and then a bunch of happy birthdays echoed from the rest of the pack, including the over enthusiastic teenagers who were all craning their necks to get her attention.
"Thank you... Oh and Alpha?"
"Yes, Carter?"
"Patrick really wants to be let out of the study now..." Carter giggled.
The Alpha's wide grin slowly faded into a look of regret and he bolted up the stairs to retrieve his eldest son from the study he demanded him to stay in. How did he forget his son?
The men in the room all chuckled, but all you could really hear was the loud laughter of all of Patrick's friends ringing out over the crowd.
----
Years had passed since the day of Carter Miller, the Rainlander Pine Pack miracle's first shift. She was now nineteen and had grown into a very strong, independent, intelligent she-wolf. In all of the years passed she had trained with the boys, much to her and all of her friends disgust. None of them were happy about it except for Penny. Who didn't understand why she trained with them, but didn't judge her.
When Carter was fifteen, and her confidence levels increased and she was beginning to show her real personality. Carter had spent nights awake, stressed that she would always fight with Penny because might usurp Penny on the leadership position on their group what with all of her wolf instincts she was told about... But Penny was still the lovely, warm-hearted girl she always had been, just older, smarter and more perfect in every way. Because of Carter's werewolf genes, it was very hard to always swallow not being on top, but the again she was now safely second, and honestly how could she be upset with having Penny as their leader?
All the girls still 'shipped' 'Pentrick', which was the stupid name they gave Penny's imaginary relationship with soon to be alpha, Patrick. Penny never properly admitted it, but the girls knew she was in love with the Alpha's son. That was another thing that gave Carter midnight anxiety. A lot of people originally thought because Patrick was going to be the Alpha, the fates would mate him to Carter, she being a she-wolf and he being the strongest male in his generation. But that's obviously not how the fates intended it to be. At first Carter thought they could be mates. Because that's what everyone was saying, and how could she really know what having a mate was like? Carter told herself that she didn't feel that incredible pull or the heart melting feeling she assumed she would feel and she felt bad for Penny. If she was Patrick's mate she would feel all those things without a doubt and she certainly wouldn't want to have someone else in love with that mate, right? So the alpha and the elders all decided this was clearly not the case and Patrick just wasn't destined to be Carter's mate. It came as quite a shock to the entire pack, that the two just weren't two halves in one whole. In fact, it was even more surprising that none of the boys in the pack gave her that desired spark. Year after year more boys would shift and they would all pray to the Moon Goddess that they were the lucky lad who was forever paired with the very rare she-wolf that happened to be in their pack. But it just never happened. And everyone had given up their biased thoughts that she would find her mate in the pack, because being nineteen, any boy who had not yet shifted would be far too young for her.
Carter almost wished she could go back to her train of thought from when she thought she was human - wishing she was a werewolf so she could have a mate. Even that made her feel better than knowing your better half was out there somewhere and you were likely never to meet him. It was really depressing for Carter not to have found her mate yet. She dream of leaving the pack border and going off to find him, travelling the world going from pack to pack and getting closer and closer to finding the one. But in reality she knew that could be the stupidest thing she could ever do. There weren't any other female wolves in this state or any of the surrounding states, or any states surrounding the surrounding states. There was one on the west coast and one on the east coast. But even then they were both much older and mated or married already. In fact Carter was probably the only eligible female on earth but Carter didn't even know if any other packs knew she existed. She didn't really know anything to do with the outside world, because frankly Alpha Markcus didn't tell her anything about this precious subject. To all the older members of the pack, the less they talked about what was past the border, the more likely it was she will leave.
Carter did know her scent grew stronger and stronger each time she went through heat. Heat was this 'magical' time which was almost the equivalent to a human 'period', just ten times worse. Carter learned all about that fun kind of thing from her She-wolf tutor, Brenny. Who had come all the way from Los Angeles. Brenny wasn't a werewolf, but she was best friends with a woman called Zoe Smith who was an actual female werewolf, who was living in LA. Zoe had grown up with Brenny, and had developed into the werewolf she was today with Brenny by her side. Not only did she grow up with Zoe, but she had also traveled across the country to Florida and spent a bit of time with the woman there. Her name was Tammy Wells. So now Brenny was now almost a she-wolf guru.
Without Brenny, Carter would be completely lost in a world she knew nothing about.
Now she was only lost. It was very hard being the only female wolf in an always-expanding pack of men. None of her friends knew her secret still, and she was finding it very hard to still get along with anyone who wasn't Penny because they were all starting to distrust her, a lot. Carter had a feeling all of her friends sort of knew, but because she didn't come right out and confess, she was being hated behind her back.
Brenny really did have a lot of experience, so when she told Carter that it was 'totally [her] choice' whether she wanting to continue waiting for her mate just like Tammy did, or marry the strongest Alpha of her home Pack, like Tiffany did, it was good and bad at the same time. It put a lot of strain on Carter because all of her life she had really wanted a mate so bad... But she was definitely starting to feel the social pressure from a few of the adults, to forget about her mate and to just marry Patrick or the Beta's son, Louis... The problem always was, whenever she even considered stopping the search for her mate, she got an unbearable pain in her stomach and she became a wrecking ball of emotion. She was starting to feel as if her mate were truly right beside her; she just wasn't looking in the right direction.
