Do you know the feeling of drowning?
How the water collects in your lungs until you can't breathe?
Well I know, because that's how I feel when I wake up. Everything around me is dark and I feel sick. I spit out some water and cough.
My throat burns and feels scratchy.
Carefully I grope around me and feel the cold ground under me, as well as something wooden, like a box, on my right side.
Where the bloody hell am I here and what is this place?
Panic rises inside of me and I immediately realize I also have no idea what my name is or where I come from.
I do not know how old I am or what I look like. My heart beats fast against my chest and I get up so I can search through the darkness for an exit. I jump when my hand touches a cold metal grating.
After one step I feel another grid next to me and I realize that I am trapped in a cage.
The sweat is running down my temple and I keep stumbling around looking for anything that might help me get out of here.
A deafening siren makes me flinch and with a jerk the cage starts to squeak and move.
I bump into what feels like a pile of boxes and something falls to the floor clanging.
Again and again bright lights flash past me and illuminate for a second the shaft where I move upwards.
Giving up this way of being in, the cage races upwards at full speed and I desperately hold on to the cold metal grating.
A few minutes have passed and the elevator has not slowed down. I keep screaming for help until my voice is hoarse and suddenly the box just stops.
Surprised, I let go of the grid and fall to the floor. I feel a stabbing pain in my right shoulder and cold blades on my arms pulling cuts into my flesh.
Through the pain I whine and instinctively turn to my left side.
My body is too weak from all the panic and screaming, so I just lie still.
The siren sounds again and a green light flashes. Then the ceiling above me opens and a glaring light shines in my eyes.
I close them, too exhausted to do anything else. Little by little I hear distant voices coming closer and closer.
Suddenly someone jumps into the box and the whole cage shakes. Steps can be heard and carefully I open my eyes a crack.
After getting used to the light, I recognize a large person squatting next to me and looking down on me.
I turn my head a little in that direction. "Bloody hell...Get the Med Jacks!" the boy says and I recognize his thick british accent, it's like mine.
"What is wrong Newt?" asks another deep voice and I try to move.
"Hey, stay down, okay? Your injuries look bad." the boy named Newt says to me and I nod slightly dazed.
Then he stands up and steps aside. I can hear whispers and murmurs.
"It's a girl and she's hurt. Where are the bloody Med Jacks?" Newt asks furiously.
That's all I can hear before I pass out and fall into a painless sleep.
