(Chapter 16) Not so safe

I quietly walked over to the food. It smelt amazing in here and there was a good selection, Levi must somehow know where all the good places are. I looked at the different croissants and some blueberry muffins. Everything looked great, how was I meant to decide? I was looking at the cakes, when I heard something fall. It was near a door to my left. I quickly glanced at Levi who was focused on bread quality. I smiled to myself and opened the door.

It lead out to a small, shadowy alleyway behind the shop. I peered around, before looking down to see an old metal baking tray in a puddle on the floor. That's probably what fell, but from where? The sky? I sceptically peered around the corner. There was no one. I scoffed and went back to the door before I felt something rough on my wrist.

I was swiftly slammed against the brick wall. I heard deep laughter and looking up to see the three dudes from earlier. One of them was holding me against the wall with a firm grip on my arms. He was smirking at me and dirtily inspecting me while the others downed some beers and chuckled. What a bunch of fucking creeps. He leaned in.

"Hello sweetheart, we saw you earlier." He grossly licking his alcoholic lips.

"Yeah, the losers drinking their problems away on the street." I said, expressionless.

He looked a bit taken-back before an angry expression painted his drunk face.

"What did you say bitch?!" He went to slap me but I swiftly caught his hand and twisted his arm, creating a horrible crack noise, probably breaking his bone. He yelled in pain as the others ran off.

"YOU BITCH!" He yelled and slapped me with his other hand. I didn't feel it at first, but after a few seconds of numbness, a sore sting fix across my entire face. I felt infuriated. But before I could beat the shit out of him, he was kicked to the other side of the alleyway by . . . Levi.

Levi had a darker expression than usual. He glared at the cowering man clutching his broken arm on the dirty floor.

"Levi?" I hesitantly said.

He stared at the dude as he clumsily ran off, before returning his attention to me. He relaxed and got closer, gently placing his hand on my red, sore cheek. He looked deeply into my shiny [e/c] eyes.

"Let's go." He took hold of my hand, holding on tighter than before.

I nodded as we walked through the town. It was now getting a bit darker.

We got up onto a rooftop while the sun set in the distance. The sky reflected a purple and yellow glow as the stars slowly emerged. The wind blew in my hair as I quietly took a seat beside Levi who was sitting on the edge with his feet dangling down. You looked into the beautiful surroundings with him for a few calming, serene minutes.

"Do you know when we are meeting Hanji?" I asked, leaning my head on his shoulder.

He glanced at my tired face before looking forward.

"In about half an hour." He said, leaning his head on mine. I could feel his dark, silky hair against mine.

After a few minutes, he pulled something out of a bag and handed me something wrapped in crinkled paper.

"What's this?" I asked, putting it in my lap.

"I didn't know what you wanted, so I got you a muffin." He said lifting his head to meet my eyes.

"T- thankyou, You really didn't need to do that you know." I said, putting the wrapped muffin in my bag.

"Yes I do . . . " He said, looking off into the dark sky. " . . . and I need to protect you."

I looked up at his calm expression, wide-eyed. I still don't see what he sees in me? I'm like anyone else. He could have anyone he wants. Why would he want to be with me? I'm nothing special. (Yes that's a song reference.). He's Corporal fucking Levi, any girl would fall to his feet. . . . . . .And yet, he chooses me of all people. Maybe he's sick. I looked at his relaxed face and his black hair swaying in the breeze.

"Why? It's not like I'm anything special . . . - " I was cut off when he pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss. He held my face as he placed his warm lips against mine. We stayed like that for a few hot minutes, while the cool air blew against us.

He pulled away and looked deeply into my cold, conflicted eyes.

"Because I love you Y/n."
