The world around him was crumbling.

It had once been full of artificial life, of love and cherry blossoms, but that was all gone now. The blue sky had turned to an inky maroon; the cherry blossoms had wilted; the school had become empty and devoid of any life, either artificial or real.

The last two living humans here-- a boy he only knew as "Boyfriend," and her,-- had left him here to rot. Senpai--

No. That wasn't his name. Or was it?

What was his name again? He couldn't remember. It was what the game had called him all these years, and apparently it didn't deem information like his actual name necessary for the plot. He decided it would be good enough, at least until he was called something better, but it still felt... wrong.

Senpai had become a victim to the game's AI, all because of those two: when the game sensed that something had gone wrong, the coding had broken down, and Senpai began to gain self awareness now. As the coding broke down further, so did the visage it had given him long ago. He had broken into the only thing left of his original form-- a bloody, painful mess that caused him agony with every moment that passed, a remnant of someone he did not remember being, the spirit of someone lost to time-- and he had remembered so much. Not everything, but enough to make him fully realize his situation.

He'd been forced into this game by her father for reasons he did not know-- something about a rap battle? his mind told him-- and at first, he had panicked. He had tried to get out of this pixelated prison, but slowly, he began to give in. He began to follow the routes, and the storylines, and he disregarded breaking the game for merely following what the code stated, and he'd become nothing more than an NPC.

But the memories of losing a rap battle to someone with her there made him remember. It loosened the code's grip on his person-- or what was left of it, anyway.

The game reset, eventually. And with it, it reset Senpai's position as an NPC. Sure, Senpai didn't know everything about who he was, but he knew enough. Enough to know how to avoid letting the game take him over again.

He awoke-- pixelated, sure, but human, and no longer in agony-- in the house he had been given by the game. He stood up and immediately looked in the mirror. He wasn't that bloody, fleshy mess he was before, sure, but he couldn't help but wonder if the face he was seeing was his or not. He couldn't even remember his name, or his birthday (but he knew his age, for some reason-- 20, apparently), so how could he expect himself to know the extent to which the game had altered him?

He could only be certain of one thing now.

He had to get the fuck out of here.
