"He's kind of an asshole, don't you think?" You commented. Cherry frowned at you.
"I mean.. a little, yeah. But it's the beginning of the year! Everyone's nerves are on edge-- I wouldn't judge him after only one incident. I'm sure he's better than that."
You stifled a 'yeah, right' somehow, and looked over at Sam in the distance once more. You two met eyes, briefly, and he shot a charming smile at you. You rolled your eyes and turned back to Cherry as she added,
"Besides, I'm the only person in school who hasn't dated anyone yet! My parents are finally giving me the chance to even consider dating, and my best option right now is Sam. He's smart and popular, and he's not bad looking either," she explained, her face flushing at that last part. "My parents would be insane not to let me date him."
"Their expectations are high," you admitted, recalling the glares you still earned from her parents sometimes. "and Sam seems like the kind of surface-level perfect they would just adore. But I think you deserve better, honestly. Isn't there anyone else you like?"
"Well..." Cherry began.
"Well?"
"Well, there's this one guy... he's really sweet, kind of dorky, might have blue hair..."
You raised your eyebrows. "Keith? Oh, he's such a sweet guy! You two would be great together."
"Well, two problems with that," Cherry continued. "My parents wouldn't let me """"settle""""," she accentuated the word with air quotations and a roll of her eyes, "for anything less than perfect. Besides, he's been dating Pico since we've been in, like, middle school. I don't wanna get between that."
"Fair," you replied begrudgingly.
"Besides," she added, finally, "I like Sam a lot. Not enough to follow him around, but... enough to at least try to get my parents to like him, too."
"That sounds almost impossible."
"It's less impossible than trying to get them to like Keith," she murmured, and the conversation ended. And with it, so did your memory.
"Cherry?" you asked, the disbelief present in your voice. "We-- we went to high school together. I remember it, but-- but how? I'm not a person, I'm a digital assistant!"
"You were a person, though," Cherry explained. You didn't want to believe it, but how else could you remember such things?
"I... I was?" You asked. "Then why am I here?"
"My parents... they-"
"Trapped me," you finished. You didn't know how you knew that, but you did. "Why did they do this to me?"
