He'd been so eager to prove himself. He was so excited to prove not only to Mister Dearest, but to Cherry that he would go to the very ends of the Earth for her. That he loved her and would be the objective best choice for her. He'd practiced the music a thousand times, over and over and over again: he'd trained his voice, even, to smooth out any cracks or flat-tones within his words, just to go that extra mile for her. He'd been so confident he had this in the bag.
Sure, he heard the rumors about her family. That there was a reason no one had tried to date her, that her family was dangerous and wouldn't hesitate to murder anyone they didn't like. But why wouldn't they like him? His grades were high, he was adored by the school, and he was as outwardly appreciative of Cherry as possible. As soon as he got this little singing tradition out of the way, Cherry would finally, truly be his.
He remembered stepping out of-- who drove them again? It wasn't Cherry... did he drive them? or did T̶̤͚̍Ẇ̶̨̘̱̱͖̔́̈́9̴̺̆͆̾̈́ų̶̜̓å̷̗̬͐̚Ẁ̵̜̩̯͓͈͑̔̏̄̂t̵͇͉̪̤̥̻̅͆͊̽̒̈́h̸͓̰̕? He couldn't remember, but he supposed it didn't matter that much.
He stepped out of the car and walked into the building, Cherry's hand in his. She smiled at him, and had told him he was going to do great, and he'd laughed and said something along the lines of, "of course I will!"
And then he met him.
Senpai was tall, taller than most people were. This guy, however, holy shit. He made Senpai feel like the smallest, most insignificant little worm Mister Dearest had ever had the displeasure of laying eyes on, and it wasn't just because he was a good foot-or-so taller than him. The way he glared at him, as if he couldn't hate him any more than he already did, didn't help his feelings in the slightest.
His hand slipped out of Girlfriend's. He felt as if even something as small as that could be reason enough for his throat to be slit.
She gave him a comforting glance, but he didn't dare let his eyes linger on her.
...
What was he doing? He came here to prove how much he loved her, but now he felt like he was being marched to his own death. He hoped to god that the rumors weren't true, that her father was just stern.
Eventually, the three made their way onto the stage, and Girlfriend left to set up the speakers and microphones, leaving Senpai and Daddy Dearest alone.
Sam allowed himself to meet eyes with him, and--
"You know what'll happen if you lose, right?"
He gulped. It was such a strange thing to say out of context, and the way his deep voice held warning in its tone made Senpai's legs feel like toothpicks. He felt every bone in his body screaming at him, telling him to run and never turn back. But he couldn't. He wouldn't do that to her, right?
