Midas

Watching Maya leave made everything hurt. My stomach turned in so many knots I didn't think about breakfast anymore. I didn't think about smoking. I didn't think about my morning coffee either. I just wanted her to stay. I put my hand to my cheek where she kissed me, wishing her lips were still there.

I watched her use one of the boats we had around the site, and she turned around and waved at me. I waved back, then she sprinted off to Frenzy. I touched my gloved hands and sighed. I was disappointed I didn't hold her hands directly. She had to touch my gloves. I didn't tell her about Scimitar. I didn't tell her anything.

"I'm so stupid," I whispered, going back inside. Everyone was sparring against each other. I was upset with all of them being so quick to judge Maya.

Why would she not show them what she can do? A skirt? We could've given her pants if she was worried about her skirt flying too much. I looked at Tina. It was Tina who put Maya into the spotlight, with her comments. If this was Tina's way of scaring off any girl I may show some interest in then she will regret this one day.

Someone noticed my presence and everyone immediately stopped. I looked around the group. "That was the most disappointing act of acceptance I've ever seen." They all looked around at each other and the ground. No one would look at me. "Who I chose to offer a job to is none of your concern. I have no issue with you guys recommending someone to me, but I have major issues when it comes to you all judging who I decide to pick." I looked around at everyone again, looking at Tina a tad longer. "If Maya were to come back and accept this job, I expect better of most of you." I glanced at Lynx and Meowscles who were sitting, kind of confused. They didn't do anything, I couldn't include them in the lecture. Me, younger than Brutus, is lecturing grown ups how to behave. "Training is done for the day, but I expect better of you tomorrow than I would have today. No exceptions. Is this all understood?" Everyone nodded, some acknowledging what I said with "Yes sir". "Good. Dismissed." And I walked out of the room.

I went straight to my office, slamming the door in the process. I took my clipboard and sat on the couch in the room. "There's no work yet. Shadow hasn't made any moves, what are we to do?" I tapped the pen on the edge. I pulled my phone out, seeing all the missed calls from Tina and Brutus from a few days prior. "Oh, no wonder I didn't hear my phone once. It was on silent mode." I looked up a map of the island, taking note of everything.

"What are you thinking, Midas?" Sandstorm asked, sitting next to me.

I looked at her, showing her the map. "Shadow isn't from here, everyone they arrest is taken elsewhere from the island. The idea is to find what points of the island can be Ghost hotspots for monitoring Shadow."

Sandstorm looked displeased with my idea, crossing her arms. "Why waste your time with this? We know what you really want."

"I don't see her in my arms again now do I Sandstorm?" I looked at Sandstorm. "I wasn't given enough time to master this tragic ability and had she listened to me-"

"Your daughter hadn't seen you for days and you expect her to listen to you?" Sandstorm snapped. "You didn't tell Maya either, so if you're not careful..." She looked at my gloved hands.

I stood up and looked at her, "I will not kill her by accident the same I did to Marigold!" Sandstorm crossed her legs, and put her mask back on. "Don't you dare Sandstorm. Don't put the blame on me. Tina scared-"

Sandstorm motioned her hand, causing my lips to shut. "They're your employees, Midas. And the fact they don't listen or respect you just shows, you're not a very good boss."
