(AE#2) An Adolescent's Resolution

Start from the beginning

Ray chuckled, which was music to Y/n's ears. She wondered if she could truly make this situation a happy one for him. He was thinking the same for her. They hoped each other could be happy in  this place.

Y/n sat down on a chair, releasing an exhausted exhale. Ray imitated her actions into the chair beside her. A moment of rest. It was merely the first day and they were fairly tired. Many of the other girls were laying on the floor hopelessly, small puddles of tears appearing from under them. First thing in the morning, Y/n and Ray had been tested academically in a contest with the other candidates. Everybody dreaded it. People who lay on the floor were the ones whom Ray and Y/n far outshined. Those still standing were glaring at the newbie duo in frustration. They themselves put up either somewhat or a decent fight. There was no denying amongst the candidates that Ray and Y/n were a massive threat. They alone would be able to raise the standards, making it near impossible to become a Mama much less stay alive.

The girls on the floor, having been outdone by the two new Grace Field children, were to be shipped by next light. There was no way out of it. The plant runners do not allow second chances. They were going to be out of this world.

Y/n, eyes closed, looked for Ray's hand with hers. Once she found the male's hand, she gave it a squeeze. He gave one in return. They all had a few minutes before they were to be in their rooms. When a shadow loomed over them and blocked the light, Y/n opened her eyes. Two girls with nice smiles waved.

"What?" Ray asked. An air of caution swirled around him and Y/n.

"We just wanted to tell you guys that you're so cool!" One said. She wore pink glasses and had long brown hair tied in an insanely messy bun.

"Yeah, you totally crushed them." The other said amusedly. She wore a red beanie and had short-ish auburn hair. "I'm Faye and this is Ashley." Ashley smiled while fiddling with her fingers.

"...Nice to meet you." Y/n greeted. Ray nodded in greeting.

Everyone already knew Y/n and Ray's name. They were introduced to all of the girls when they first arrived. In addition, after the competition, no one would forget them. The duo proved they were both there for a purpose. It was clear to all of them that Y/n and Ray were a massive threat that could absolutely not be ignored.

Out of hatred and jealousy, many of them called them by their product numbers to spite them. Only in the first day, Y/n had heard, "81194 is pretty cute. Too bad he's wasting himself on 18194..."

      "That stinks."

      "She's not even that pretty."

       "Yeah. Cynthia far beats her."

"Does 18194 even deserve to be here?"

"She has that face that resembles Margaret. You know, the one who was killed the first day of being here? So lame."

"Just watch- She'll be out by tomorrow."

To be honest, it did kind of sting that they did not say her name. It stung that none of them got to know Y/n personally. It stung that they were so quick to judge. Maybe together they could have changed the cruel system of stabbing each other in the back. Maybe if they were a little bit like her family back in plant 3, things would be different.

But there was one thing for certain: if they were going to attack her and Ray, there was no way she would let that slide. He was the thing that helped her keep going. He was infinitely important to her. She would not let some petulant, peevish girls ruin something like that. No, there was no need to worry. The two have been together since they were infants. There was no way.

"Did you guys study hard back in your house?" Faye asked. She tucked a clump of her auburn hair behind her ear. "You're pretty brilliant for being newbies."

       "Not really." Y/n answered.

        "Wow! So cool!" Ashley commented.

"81194, 18194, 34193, 64793 return to your rooms immediately." A voice on a speaker spoke out.

"Man..." Ashley groaned. "Well, we'll see you later." The two left.

The duo began their small walk towards their shared room as well. It was silent for the most part. Any outsider looking in would assume they were tired. Lonely. Scared. But they never felt more intrigued.

Mama and Norman was the only competition they had back in the house. Although these girls may not be as intelligent, they for sure had numbers against a common threat. This would be unlike any challenge they had ever faced. There was something that was somewhat exciting about the situation.

Ray held the door open for Y/n. She lay on the bottom bunk. The old mattress creaked under her weight. The two had decided to switch top or bottom every so often. (get out of here, sinners) Ray sat against the wall and propped his leg up, resting his arm on his raised leg. Y/n covered her eyes with her arm.

Suddenly, Y/n began chuckling. It turned into laughing. She laughed as if she had just heard the funniest joke ever. Ray merely looked at her.

When Y/n calmed down, she exhaled relaxedly. Ray interestedly asked what she was amused about. "We get to take a shortcut. These girls think they're smart? Ha."

"We'll show them they can't mess with either of us. Is that what you're thinking?" Ray questioned with a confident smirk.

     "Naturally." Y/n replied.

"No one has ever beat us, after all." Ray reminded. "So? Should we get started? I have a few observations."

"Me too." Y/n informed. Ray held a hand out for her to go first. "They could couldn't stop moving when they said certain things. I read in that psychology book that most people cannot stay still when they lie."

"Ha, you had to read a book to find that out?" Ray teased. "I found that out by personal experience." He gloated.

Y/n pushed the male's head downwards roughly while giving a scoff. "Cocky today, hm?"

"Alright, I'm sorry." He chuckled. "Go on."

"Well, in addition, this is really no surprise, but their demeanor was practically as big of a sham as the idea that this farm was an orphanage." Y/n snickered. "Plain as day, too."

"Wanna bet Emma would have fallen for it?" Ray joked.

"You're so mean." Y/n spoke. "...It's true, though." They shared a small laugh. "I already miss them."

"What if we whizz through all this stuff?" Ray suggested. Y/n raised a brow at him. "Hear me out." He requested. "Not only will we increase their favor and liking to us, which ultimately decreases our chance of death, but we also could potentially join Mama at our house. We could probably spend time with many of our younger siblings."

Y/n nodded excitedly. "Yeah, but... Norman, Emma, Don, Gilda... By that time, they'd be..."

Ray looked down somberly. "We'll keep surviving. For them. If we die, to the demons or these infernal girls, that's the last of each of them. We have to continue to survive."

Y/n nodded. "Tomorrow we have more tests. Before that, we have basic house lessons."

"Which is fine, right?" The male smirked. "We had plenty of experience back in the house, anyway." Y/n nodded in determination and agreement. Ray then leaned over and gave her a tight hug. He then whispered, "Even if this fails... I'm going to protect you no matter what." Hearing the sincerity in his voice made Y/n's heart flutter.

Y/n broke the hug and put a hand on his smooth cheek. "We'll get through this."

Ray genuinely grinned at her. "Together?"

      "Together."
