Scarlett looked over at Awsten who was sitting on her couch, knees pulled into his chest patiently waiting for her to start talking and she smiles at him.
"Do you want anything to drink?" she asks him, getting up from her spot on the couch and she pauses when she hears him stumble over his words.
"Oh- I- I don't drink. Thank you though." he says quietly.
"I'm pretty sure that water is essential to life." she says playfully, not diving further into his comment and she lets out a breath of relief when she hears him laugh behind her.
Scarlett turns around to face Awsten who was still smiling, "Are you always this much of a smartass?" he asks her curiously and she nods.
"Yeah pretty much, are you sure you don't want anything to drink? It's good to stay hydrated after playing a show." she says, and Awsten feels his face warm up at the face she was looking out for him despite just meeting him.
"A water would be great, thank you." he responses, his tone genuine and she waves him off seeing as it was no big deal.
He was a guest in her home afterall.
"Do you mind if I have wine?" she asks him after a pulling a water bottle out of her fridge for him, tossing it to him from the kitchen.
"Go ahead, I don't care at all." he assures her, and she nods pouring herself a glass making her way back to the couch placing it down on the coffee table.
"Alright Knight. What do you want to know about the EP?" she asks him, her smile bright and he returns the smile happy to see her so excited.
"Absoutely everything. Start wherever you want." he tells her, motioning her to start talking and Scarlett clears her throat nodding.
"So basically I've always found having conversations about feelings really hard, I'm not sure the reasoning behind that but I've always been that way for as long as I can remember." she starts off slowly, smiling when she sees Awsten eagerly nod his head letting her know that she has his full attention.
Scarlett leans over grabbing her wine to take a sip of it before continuing, "So putting things into the context of song makes it so much easier for me to talk about them, each of the songs represent really pivitol moments in my life at least at the time. I think as I've gotten older these events seem less important but they affected me at the time." she says thoughtfully.
"Falling Asleep at the Wheel is my favorite hands down, I love that's what the EP is named after." Awsten says eagerly and Scarlett blushes.
"When I wrote that one, I was going through this sort of dead end relationship and it was just completely fizziling out around me. Not in any sort of dramatic way, but to me it sort of felt like falling asleep. It started off slowly and then happened all at once, I knew I couldn't control it but I still didn't know exactly how to feel about it." she tells him.
Awsten hums in agreement, "That's an interesting way to look at that."
He smiles when he notices how excited she's getting to be talking about her music, "It's like, you know when you fall asleep watching a TV show or a movie and then you wake up and you're like oh fuck that really sucked but it is what it is?" she asks him.
"That's what Falling Asleep at the Wheel is, but in the aspect of a relationship." she finishes, and Awstens jaw drops.
"That's fucking genius." he says excitedly.
"Overkill and Vanilla are about the same relationship." she tells him matching his excited tone.
"Vanilla. We were on and off for two years? And this was basically like therapy for me, it was my way of saying this is finally over and for once, I'll be the one to say it and stick to it. It's me reflecting and realizing that all of my good memories over the last two years actually had nothing to do with him. I had my best nights when he wasn't around." she explains quickly before moving onto the next song.
"Then Overkill was written when we first met, we had just gotten into the relationship and I fell hard and fast. Too fast, but basically it's about wanting to tell someone that you love them but you don't know if it's going to scare them off because it's too soon or not. It's this whole internal conflict of not wanting to be overkill but wanting them to know your true feelings." she says thoughtfully, and she blushes again due to the look on his face.
"I think I'm going to keep calling you red, because I think you look cute when you blush like that." Awsten tells her out of the blue, and Scarlett chokes on her wine that she was sipping on at his comment.
"Tell me about Live Wire because that made me cry." Awsten says and she feels her eyes grow wide.
"You cried." she repeats in disbelief.
Awsten hums in agreement, nodding waiting for her to continue.
"Live Wire, is about growing apart from friends. Friends that you've had basically your entire life and there was no decerinble reason behind it, but it happened." she says sadly.
"We grow up and we grow apart is a pretty literal line, we just stopped doing things together and now we're basically strangers again. So it's just me hoping that they're still them, they're still happy and healthy. Wherever they may be." she says, her tone sad and Awsten feels his heart ache.
"Then Drop Dead was written when I decided I wasn't going to go to college and I was going to persue music, which happened to be the time I was in the worst relationship of my life. It wasn't the same one that the other three were written about. I think the lyrics are pretty self explantory on that one." she says with a watery laugh.
Awsten sits there for a minute debating if he should reach out for her hand, if he should try to hug her or comfort her because he had asked for explanations behind these songs that very clearly had lots of personal connections to them.
"Deep End." she says, taking a deep breath, "Is about my 3 sisters, and how regardless of what any of us are going through I will support them to the best of my abilities not matter what. The first time I showed it to them we all sobbed, we were also drunk so that probably added to it." she laughs.
"Sorry I did not mean to ramble on for forever." she adds on softly.
Awsten shakes his head quickly dismissing her apology, "You are incredible, your lyrics, everything about it is absolutely amazing. Never apologize for your art."
Scarlett clears her throat, looking back over at the blue haired boy sitting on her couch that she had only met a few hours prior and she was happy to have him here.
She had never really been good at making new friends, but there was something about Awsten she couldn't quite put her finger on.
