"Hey, I bought food" you said.
If he were a cat, his ears would have perked up at the sound of food. His body language shifted when you pulled out the little bags carrying your treats. You handed him the scroll, which his eyes lit up looking at.
"Ah, you've noticed his sugar addiction I see" Watari commented.
"Impossible not to, the man stuck his lollipop in his tea right before my eyes last time" you snickered.
L gave his caretaker a playful glare, telling him of for teasing him. Clicking the end of his pen he reached over his laptop to write in his notebook.
Thank you.
"I figured if I'm here to contribute to the case I may as well bring the food as well since I pass the bakery on my way, I was gonna get you bubble tea as well but I had no idea what kind you liked" you replied.
He lit up again, obviously liking bubble tea as well. Scribbling on his paper, you watched the words form.
Strawberry milk tea with popping pearls. Full sugar of course.
That sounded sickeningly sweet. On brand for him.
"I'll keep that in mind for next time" you said.
Sitting in the same chair you had before, you looked over his shoulder at the case files. Full of crime scene photos.
"Speaking of tea, L I suppose you'll want some?" Watari asked.
L nodded. Clearly the two were rather close since all it took was a look and Watari knew exactly the kind of tea he wanted. It was almost telepathic. And he was off into the kitchenette area of the hotel room to make said tea. You picked up the autopsy report for one of the victims, and the copy of the timeline you and L had made last time.
This was the third victim out of currently eight.
Cuts or gashes, only one bruise on the head consistent with falling from a small height. Like they'd tripped over. No broken bones, no drugs or alcohol in their system, nothing. The only strange thing was that bruise, that could be easily explained.
"This is so weird..." you muttered.
L let you read everything over, munching on the scroll you'd gotten him. While strawberry shortcake was his dessert of choice, this scroll was quickly making a solid number 2 on his list of favourites. He also liked the fact you'd only met once before and you had the thought to get him something he'd like, he didn't see kindness that often.
"And all the victims don't have a single strange autopsy?" You asked.
He shook his head, licking the icing sugar off his fingers.
"That's so fucking weird... how can people just die with absolutely no cause?"
He shrugged, still at a loss.
Despite not talking, he was actually pretty easy to communicate with. He was very expressive, in his body language and in his gestures. You could tell just from the way he gazed at things how he was feeling. Maybe that was a side effect of never talking, you learn to express yourself through other means. He took another autopsy report, this one of the 8th victim and handed it to you. He pointed at the injury list.
When you read it, you noticed the exact same bruise on this victim too. As if they'd both tripped.
"Huh... so it's like they both were standing when they died and dropped face first, hitting their head and making the same bruise?" You suggested.
He nodded, and gestures to the crime scene photos.
Everyone else's bodies were found already sitting or lying down. These two were the only ones that had seemingly fallen from a standing position. And they were the only two that were found outside.
"Hm, these two had the death kick in while they were going about their day, but the others died while at home and lounging around. So it seems the exact time they die is just random... some are at home sleeping, some are out running errands, some are sitting at the dinner table..." you mumbled.
L nodded again, licking the last of the scroll off his fingers then turning to grab his notebook again.
If there's no specific time pattern, and we can't connect any of the victims together it's probably random attacks. Either that or there is something that connects them but it's been covered up and we haven't dug deep enough to find it yet.
"I mean, they're all adults. So that's one thing. But that's such a broad net to cast" you said.
Broad but at least it's something. Unless the next victim is a child, we can safely say the victims are adults. Around 20-45 so far.
It was a start, a very weak one. But a start.
He might not he able to speak but clearly his mind was way too big for his scrawny body. He'd noticed all these details and pointed them out to you before you even considered them. Truly incredible.
