Before you could head off to England to chase down this mystery man running a crime ring, you had one last thing to check out in the local area.

"Uhhh... it should be on the left" you said.

Watari was driving you and L to the coordinates of the drop of point that was mentioned in the chat logs, hoping to find a security camera in the area or maybe even some evidence.

"This seems like a risky place to use as a drop off point" he mentioned.

"I know... it's literally a normal street... I guess it is pretty inconspicuous though, like anyone could be on a street at any time so it's not like being here would be suspicious"

L gazed out the window, deep in thought as usual. He hadn't spoken today, which when you first met him you'd find normal since he never spoke anyway. But ever since he'd been getting better at talking to you, you'd gotten used to at least a good morning from him. But you didn't want to push him, some days he was just too drained to talk.

"Right here, that's the exact place" you pointed out.

Parking on the side of the road, you looked out the window a little confused.

It was a bus stop. No one was there at the moment as this quiet street people only saw life when people were coming home from work and school. Everyone would be out at this time of day.

"A bus stop? That's a risky move. Then again they are seasoned criminals who know how to sneak around... come on L-" you began.

L was still in a daze, not having heard you.

"L!"

This time he registered your voice, and realised you'd arrived at the coordinates.

"Come on, let's take a look" you said.

He nodded, and you both got out and walked across the road to the empty bus stop. You looked underneath it, above it, around it, but it seemed pretty normal. You also looked around the area for any security cameras that could capture the bus stop, but found that the surrounding houses weren't close enough to capture any footage.

"Hmm... Damnit, nothing. Oh well, worth a shot. Plus now we know it's a drop off point we can have police surveillance around to catch the next drop off in the act" you said.

Again, L seemed out of it. Now you were starting to worry a bit, he wasn't usually this dazed.

"L" you said.

He looked over at you, suddenly remembering he was indeed a living person standing outside.

"You ok? You've been all... spaced out" you asked.

He thought a moment, and nodded. Although clearly something was up because he didn't usually act like this. You didn't buy his nod and have him a raised eyebrow.

"Really? Because it doesn't look like it" you said.

He was silent again for a moment, processing his words before speaking.

"Just... thinking... a lot" he said.

"About?" You asked.

"I haven't been home in ages... going back to England after so long feels kind of surreal"

He told you he was from Winchester, but not much else. He was still trying to find a way to tell you the whole story without hurting himself in the process. Writing it out was the best way to convey lots of information at once but at the same time, writing your trauma down kind of hurts... you still didn't know the full story. All you knew is he didn't have a good childhood before he met Watari. Which lead you to believe Watari was either a family friend that took him in or a caretaker of sorts.

It was obvious they weren't blood related just from looking at them, but they did have a very found family vibe. Foster father and son. You also knew L was an orphan of some kind, some he'd mentioned 'being able to relate to you' when he found out you were adopted.

Your working theory was something happened to him, and his birth parents that caused Watari to take him in and adopt him. You were pretty sure that was the general story, but you had no idea what all the details were. But you can't blame him for not being able to talk about it. Whatever happened was so bad that he literally developed mutism because of it, something that bad would be really hard to talk about.

Although knowing all that did make you worry that his sudden change in attitude was a trauma response of sorts.

"You... are ok with going there right?" You asked.

"Oh! Yeah I'm ok with going to Winchester... there's some people at home I wanna see. It's just..." he trailed off.

Whenever he trailed off like that, you knew that he'd not be able to get the words out. His battery for talking runs out fast in situations like this. He looked down at his notebook and pen, wanting to write but needing a surface to write in. You turned away from him and gestured for him to lean on your back, so he put the book against you and began to write. It took a minute to finish his message but he handed you the book over your shoulder and let you read it rather quickly.

It's just that the area we found the IP is nearby to something I don't like remembering that's all. Winchester is great, it's full of the fun memories, and some people I can't wait to see again. The area the IP address is, next to Winchester? That's somewhere I don't like to think about.

Ah, that explained it. He was probably anxious thinking about it. A strange mix of exited to go home to Winchester but worried about the crimes going on in the city he dreaded.

"I see, but hey you have me. I can do all the field work it's ok. You don't even have to set foot there, you be the sword and I'll be the shield" you assured.

He gave you a smile, wrapping you up in a thank you hug. One you gladly returned.

"And hey, you don't even have to tell me what happened if it's too hard" you offered.

"No I will... I just... need time to figure out how" he muttered.

"I'm glad you trust me enough"

In truth, you were one of the only people he trusted. You were one of the only people he loved. He was beyond grateful for you sticking with him through everything so far, and he hoped you'd stay with him forever. And he hoped one day he could become part of your family too. Meet your dads in person, meet your cool cousin you've mentioned, be the son in law figure to everyone. He just wanted a family really.

He had his own little found family. Watari and his successors, but he wanted a bigger one. Maybe it was the orphan urge to have what he missed out on or the painful reminders this case had suddenly thrown at him, but really... he just wanted to feel loved. And you did, you always did.

If you were such a good person then surely your family would be too. And maybe one day his little found family could meet yours and you could merge into one big one.

He couldn't help but snicker at himself, realising just now head over heels he was for you that he was already wanting to marry you and die old together.

"What?" You giggled, hearing his amusement.

"Nothing. Just thinking about how head over heels you have me" he replied.

"I could say the same thing about you. I definitely wasn't expecting to take a murder case and end up meeting the world greatest detective, kissing him, dating him, travelling with him, getting to know all his secrets and being so proud of him and how much he's improved with communicating it makes me wanna spoil him rotten" you smiled.

You watched him smile, blush at your words and look away in shyness. You always found it amusing how he could go from super serious, mysterious detective to a shy mess in under a few seconds.

"We'll get through all this ok? I have your back 24/7" you assured, placing a kiss on his cheek.

"I love y-you..." he said, his daily talking limit running out after that.

"I love you too, forever"
