A/n: since you're a detective that specialises in cases that involve discrimination and hate crimes I wanna warn there'll be talk of that kind of thing through the rest of the book. Nothing graphic, but a heads up anyway.
Today was your second mission out on the field. Only this time L was actually with you.
You were surprised, since he usually stayed back and listened in via wiretaps. But he was insistent on seeing the suspect in person. Not to talk to them or anything, just to get a closer look.
The mission was to go to the university campus and gather information from students, as well as follow the victim around to get an idea of the kind of person they were. You had to blend in, so rather than wearing your fancy work suit, you wore what all the cool university kids were wearing. Pulling together an outfit that hopefully blended in. L didn't bother with disguises, his clothes were plain anyway.
He was to pretend to be a normal friend of yours and would wear headphones so it looked like he was listening to music when he was actually listening in. That way people wouldn't try and talk to him, it'd look like you were just dragging a friend around.
You weren't the only one surprised L was willing to do this, Watari was too. Although he had a feeling it was because L wanted to spend more time with you.
"Ok, that building is where his classes are so I guess it's best to go around there, people would have seen him around the area" you said, looking out the car window at the building.
L leaned over to scout the area out, and seemed to be ok with you taking the wheel on this operation.
"Right, let's go. Text me to talk to me" you added.
Getting out of the car, you grabbed your bag and threw it on your shoulder. L plugged headphones into his iPod, but didn't play any music. He could hear everything, nothing would get past him. You grabbed him by the arm, pulling him along with you. He didn't seem to mind, in fact he secretly liked the contact. Walking through the campus, the students scattered the area. Some heading to class, some heading home and some sitting at benches and on the lawn studying and snacking. Everyone seemed rather calm for being in an area a murder occurred.
Your phone beeped, and when you looked at the message it was L as you thought. Who'd texted as you dragged him behind you.
Do you have any idea how you're going to just casually strike up a conversation about him without any suspicion?
"Don't worry I got this. I've done cases like this before" you replied.
There was an area of benches and tables outside one of the buildings for students to eat and study, so you took a seat at one and scouted the area. It was mainly girls sitting around here, a few boys, but mainly girls. That was what you wanted, it seemed from all your research that girls didn't like this guy. They all thought he was creepy, so you'd definitely be able to get information out of girls that had classes with or near him.
L seemed a little confused to your approach, but played along. He simply watched your techniques masking as a friend listening to music.
"Dude I was going to go to that party but I had an exam the next day so I skipped out" one of the girls said.
"You missed out girl! It was so fun, you should have SEEN Zach, he got shitfaced and thought it was a good idea to try and rearrange all the furniture" the other replied.
Two girls, one blonde one brunette. They sat at the table next to you. Looks like they were trying to study but for distracted.
"What? He just picked up the hosts couches and stuff?"
