Chapter 8 | poisonus territory

Start from the beginning

You assumed the figure was male, just from height and build. But it was hard to tell in the darkness and their baggy clothes. You couldn't see a clear face, thanks to the hood but you could see they were very pale from the skin on their hands.

"Which at first I didn't think was that weird. People get lost you know? Maybe he just went the wrong way. But then only 15 minutes later... the same guy comes back via car" She explained.

It was a little hard to make out in the darkness, but she was right, through the window of the car the same hooded person could be seen.

"I think he came up the corner on hayton street just a house down, turned this way. Maybe I'm just being a paranoid conspiracy theorist here but I feel like he was following her, keeping a decent distance so she didn't notice. Did something to her in the small gap between when he passed on foot. Then drove past to make sure she'd consumed the poison looking through the windows or something" she explained.

That might actually be possible. This was the first suspicious figure you'd managed to get in all the footage you'd gathered so far.

"And you've never seen this guy before?" You asked.

"Never. Which at first I was willing to brush off. I mean there's a busy road nearby so people walk through all the time. But given the circumstances..." she replied.

"Hm.. interesting. Can't really make out the number plate of the car but the make and model can definitely help. Can I get a copy of this?"

"Of course take as much footage from that day as you need"

She allowed you to take a copy of the footage, and look at the footage from the rest of the day just in case. You also took down her name and number just in case. Her name ended up being lyssa, and her dog who hadn't stopped sniffing you since you walked in was called buns.

Fitting name for a round fluffy dog that had the colour of a freshly baked bun.

"If it's any help, I also noticed something else. I mentioned it to the police but I don't know if they took it seriously or anything..." she added.

"Go on" you replied.

"I know that she graduated high school last year and went into university at the beginning of this year, she used to walk home from school with friends but I'm guessing they went to different universities or something because she started to walk home alone this year. One day about a month ago I was watering my garden when she walked past on the phone to someone and I heard her mention a guy at her campus that and I quote 'is totally going to catch a case one day'. So I'm assuming she was talking to a friend about someone she encountered at university that creeped her out"

Interesting... so she noticed a sketchy figure a month before dying. She must've had too much of an interaction since she didn't seem to be aware she was getting stalked, but she was aware of a creepy person on her campus.

"Huh. That's definitely suspicious. Either totally involved or a really wild coincidence, I'll have to look into that more" you replied.

With the footage secured and a tip from a potential witness, you were ready to move onto the next house. You thanked Lyssa, gave buns a goodbye ear scratch and headed for the next house. Before you could continue though you felt your phone buzz.

As you expected, a text from L who'd listened into the conversation via the bugs on your clothes.

That could be our best bet. Get any footage you can following the route the car would have taken, along the street you're on and the street she mentioned. I'm already looking into people at the victims campus that could potentially be this sketchy person.

Just like L to be on a lead the second he hears it. Didn't take long for him to be hacking into the universities database for clues. You texted him back before continuing.

If the guy is this sketchy person he might be a science major. That way he'd have access to materials to make the poison in one of the universities labs.

You continued your mission, collecting as much footage as you could and getting any additional information from the people on the street. Most people seemed to be young people in their early adult years as well as older people who had adult kids. It was because there's two universities nearby, so students would rent properties and do roommate arrangements to be close to school. And some parents for houses here when they had kids so their kids could be close to university when they grew up.

This whole area was young adults, the most statistically the most vulnerable people for crimes. They're usually living on their own or without parents for the first time at his age, there's no one around to protect them but themselves.

A small child usually has a parent or caregiver to protect them, the older generations have enough life experience to handle themselves. But young adults fresh into university still navigating the world, living alone for the first time and going out to uni parties every weekend? Prime targets.

Maybe that had something to do with the target victims. They were all around 18-30, young adults who would be just entering university and living alone for the first time.

You had a lot to show L when you got back, it seems like you were finally onto something.
