I stood frozen by the living room window, my breath fogging the glass as I stared out into the impossible. My heart thudded against my ribs, a steady drumbeat of panic. The Jedi Temple was engulfed in flames.
Towering columns of black smoke climbed so high they swallowed the sky, turning daylight into a dark, choking dusk. It looked like a nightmare—except it was real.
They said it wasn't an accident.
That someone had attacked the Temple.
That Jedi were dying.
The words echoed in my mind like a scream I couldn't hear. My chest tightened with dread. My thoughts went straight to the ones I loved. Anakin. My friends. Were they still inside? Fighting for their lives? Already gone?
I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think.
And worst of all—I couldn't do anything.
Then I heard the familiar clinking of metal feet approaching.
C-3PO stepped beside me, his golden frame glinting faintly in the smoke-dimmed light.
"I'm sure Master Skywalker is alright," he said in his soft, mechanical voice, trying to soothe me the only way he knew how.
"Let's hope so..." I whispered, blinking hard. My voice cracked with emotion. "Can you try to find out what happened? Please?"
"I will try," he replied, bowing his head slightly before turning and leaving the room.
The moment he was gone, I collapsed.
Sobs burst from me like a dam breaking. I dropped to my knees, covering my face with shaking hands, and cried harder than I ever had in my life. Grief, terror, helplessness—it all poured out at once, and I couldn't hold any of it back.
I don't know how long I stayed like that. Time didn't make sense anymore. Everything had blurred into smoke and sorrow.
Then I heard the door creak open.
"3PO?" I called out, my voice hoarse.
But it wasn't him.
"Obi-Wan?" I gasped, stunned.
Relief crashed over me in a wave. If Obi-Wan was alive... maybe Anakin was too.
"Y/N!" he called, crossing the room quickly. His voice was desperate. Raw.
I ran to him, throwing my arms around his shoulders. He held me tightly, and I could feel how shaken he was. His whole body trembled, his breath unsteady.
Obi-Wan had been like family to me for years. An old friend of my parents, he had known me since I was little and he was just a Padawan. He was the one who introduced me to Anakin when we were both twelve. That day had changed everything. We'd become best friends. Then lovers. Then husband and wife, in secret.
"I'm so glad you're alright, Y/N," Obi-Wan said, his eyes full of pain. Grief hung on him like a shadow.
"Me? I should be saying that to you," I said, brushing a tear from my cheek.
"Not that I don't want you here, but... why did you come?" I asked gently, worry tightening in my chest.
He sat down on the couch with me, taking a moment to gather himself before he spoke.
"It's... it's Anakin," he said, his voice breaking. "I thought he might be here. Or... might have come to you."
The way he said it filled me with dread.
