"What do you mean? What does Anakin have to do with this? Is he hurt? Is he—?"
"No," Obi-Wan interrupted softly, "I think that would have been easier."
My world tilted.
I stared at him. "Is he dead?" I barely choked out.
Obi-Wan met my eyes. There was such sorrow in his expression it nearly destroyed me.
"No... Anakin is alive. But... he's changed."
"Changed how?" I demanded, already shaking my head.
"He's turned to the dark side," Obi-Wan said heavily. "He led the attack on the Temple."
"No," I whispered. "No, that's not true. Not Anakin. It can't be—"
"You can't imagine how much I wish you were right," he said, his voice barely audible.
Silence fell between us, thick and suffocating.
"I need to know if you know where he is," Obi-Wan said after a long pause.
"You're going to kill him, aren't you?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
He looked away, eyes dark with guilt. That was all the confirmation I needed.
"Then I can't tell you," I said, my voice trembling. "Even if I knew."
He nodded solemnly, understanding.
"Then I'll find him myself," he said quietly. "I have to try. I need to talk to him."
He stood and walked to the door, pausing with his hand on the handle.
He turned to look at me one last time.
"You two... you're together, aren't you?"
I didn't respond. I couldn't. My silence was enough.
"I'm so sorry," he said, and then he was gone.
The room felt colder without him. The air felt heavier.
But I didn't have time to mourn. There was one thing Anakin and I had promised to use only in the most desperate of times: a tracker, hidden in a box in our wardrobe. It connected us no matter where we were in the galaxy.
This was the moment. The emergency we'd always feared.
I opened the box with shaking hands, activated the device—and my heart stopped.
"Mustafar..." I whispered.
A lava planet. Violent. Unforgiving. A place you only went when you had nowhere else to turn.
I didn't think. I ran straight to my private hangar and launched my ship, heart pounding, praying to the stars that I wasn't too late.
The flight was short, but it felt like eternity.
When I landed, the heat hit me like a wave. The ground shimmered with rising flames and the air reeked of ash.
Then I saw him.
Anakin was crossing a long bridge, walking toward me from the massive building beyond. He looked so different—darker, more powerful, but still unmistakably him.
I ran to him.
He caught me in his arms, lifting me up, kissing me like I was the only thing that mattered. For a moment, the world disappeared. I clung to him like a lifeline, stroking his hair, searching his eyes for the boy I loved.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, brushing hair from my face.
"I was so scared," I said. "Obi-Wan came to me. He told me things, Anakin... terrible things. I used the tracker."
He cupped my cheek gently. "What things?"
"He said you attacked the Temple. That you turned to the dark side..."
Anakin looked away, pain flickering in his eyes before he looked back.
"Obi-Wan is trying to turn you against me," he said.
"He cares about you. About us," I told him. "I think he's known for a while."
"Us?" he repeated.
"He wants to help you," I whispered.
Anakin said nothing, just stared down at the ground. My heart ached.
"Anakin... all I want is your love. That's all I've ever wanted."
"Love won't save you, Y/N," he said quietly. "Only my new powers can."
I swallowed. "So this is what it's about? Power?"
"I won't lose you like I lost my mother," he said, fierce and desperate. "If this is the cost, I'll pay it. I'm already more powerful than any Jedi. I can overthrow the Chancellor—and I will. For you. To protect you."
My breath caught. I was terrified. Terrified of losing him.
"Anakin... please. Come away with me. To Naboo. Or anywhere. Let's leave this all behind while we still can."
But he just shook his head.
"You don't understand. We don't need to run anymore. I'll overthrow the Chancellor... and you and I will rule the galaxy. Together."
He stroked my hair again, eyes full of conviction.
And I—gods help me—I gave in.
"If that's really the path you're choosing... then I'm going with you."
He embraced me tightly. "You don't know how much those words mean to me, Y/N. I wouldn't survive losing you."
He kissed me, and I kissed him back, tears slipping down my cheeks.
"I love you, Anakin."
"I love you more," he said.
And together, hand in hand, we walked back into the building.
Later, he told me everything. His full plan. The truth behind it all.
I don't know if that makes me a bad person. I don't know if I chose wrong.
But I don't regret my decision—not that day, and not any day after.
Obi-Wan never found us. Part of me mourns that, because he was a true friend. But I couldn't let him kill the man I loved.
And Anakin was right. After he overthrew the Chancellor, we ruled the galaxy—together.
