You were unaware of L's mission to confess to you going on inside as you stood on the balcony, taking photos on your cheap digital camera. It was kind of hard to get good ones with the limited photo quality you had, but you wanted to send your dads something. And right now as the sun was starting to go down and all the lights on the buildings were turning on, was a perfect time to get a pretty picture.
"Hmm... if only I had a better camera I could do one of those cool bokeh effects" you muttered, adjusting the settings as best you could.
Holding up the camera you moved around the balcony looking for the best angle, snapping pictures here and there.
"Dad would like this place, he's always been into the city life..."
Both your dads had a lot in common, but one thing they differed in was how they liked to live. One dad loved the city, the other loved nature. So when they married and adopted you, they settled on the outskirts of the city where the rural met the urban. Best of both worlds. A 30 minute drive west would lead to the city and one east would lead to the country side. You had fond childhood memories of swimming out in the lake and then driving into the city to get ice cream's afterward.
And the area was just in the right place where most of the community were inclusive and accepting. So while you did get the odd snide remark about having two dads here and there, for the most part people didn't care. In fact your childhood best friend has two mums, and that's part of the reason you bonded so well and so quickly.
There was one thing about your childhood you did regret though, not taking those optional sign language classes your school offered. If you did you might be able to talk to L easier. But then again, you didn't know if you could ever give up those art classes you took. They were so much fun.
Leaning on the railing, reminiscing about the good old days as you cycled though the pictures you'd taken, you heard the door open behind you.
"Hey, do any of these look good to you?" You asked, feeling L's presence behind you.
He looked over your shoulder and inspected the photos you'd taken, nodding that they were all good ones. It was when you turned to face him you noticed he had a paper with him.
"What's up?" You asked.
He seemed nervous, but handed you the folded paper anyway. You weren't sure what to expect, usually when he had a message for you it would be in his book or he'd text you. And recently if it was a quick message he'd say it to you.
You took the paper, and opened it up. The first thing you noticed was the use of your gel pens, that you did mind him using anyway. In blue and purple he'd written a long message. In the margins of the paper he'd drawn lollies, hearts and your favourite bubble tea flavours.
What was this?
(Y/n).
I know I won't be able to say all this with talking yet. I'm still trying to get past a few sentences, so I'll write it instead. But that doesn't mean I mean this any less, I mean it a lot.
Thank you for being so patient with me, I'm not used to such kindness, most people undermine the seriousness of the condition and push me too far. It always ends in tears. So thank you so much for understanding, and putting up with me even though not being able to talk all the time can make things hard sometimes.
I also want to thank you for all the work you've done on the case so far. I was honestly terrified of getting someone else involved, but I know I made the right choice picking you. I'd probably still be stuck on the method of death if you hadn't figured out it was poison before me. When the case is over I hope you stay to do more cases, we work really well together and I've grown used to your company.
I never really expected things to end up this way, and I wasn't expecting it so it took me a while to fully realise but... you're not like anyone I've ever met. You're so much better than anyone I've ever met. Your willingness to help, your understanding and your kindness makes you such a joy to be around. Not to mention your dumb puns are actually pretty funny sometimes, and you're way prettier than anyone I've ever laid eyes on before.
Basically, I love you.
A lot. You've grown on me really quickly. I fell so hard and fast I didn't even realise I had at first. It was so unexpected, but now I'm a total lovesick mess just being near you. I've never felt this way before, and honestly I'm still new to it and I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I just know that I'll go nuts if I don't get this off my chest.
Even if you don't feel the same way, as long as you know and we can stay friends that's ok with me. Just being near you means everything to me.
I'm not amazing at love, I never saw it as a kid. That's why I can't talk, some really traumatic things happened to me that moulded me into who I am now. But I do know what love isn't. Everything I saw back then wasn't love, and everything I feel for you, that is love. What else could it be? No one has ever made me blush like a schoolgirl after her crush says hi to her in the halls before.
I just needed to get that out there. Thank you for everything, thank you for being patient. I love you.
-L
You kind of just stood there and stared at the letter for a moment, absolutely not expecting to he showered with compliments and a love confession at all. But did you mind? Absolutely not. This was the sweetest thing that had ever happened to you, and you couldn't help but smile like an idiot as you read such beautiful words.
L might not be good at talking, but he's amazing with words.
He just looked down at his feet, scared to make eye contact with you fearing a negative reaction. But his attention was quickly turned away from the very interesting ground when he felt your arms wrap around him and pull him into a tight hug.
"You're such a sweetheart L..." you smiled.
He felt a bit relived that you did seem to be reacting badly, and wrapped his arms around you in return.
"Take as long as you need to talk it out ok? Don't worry about me not taking it seriously because you didn't say it directly. Writing everything down is just as effective, in fact it's rather cute to get love letters, I've never had one before" you assured.
He took a moment to muster up the courage, but the words he'd been trying to say finally spilled out.
"I... I love you (y/n)" he said.
Your smile just got brighter, and your grip on his tighter.
"I love you too L" you replied.
He could feel his heart skip a beat, his cheeks heat up and butterflies explode in his stomach. A smile broke on his face, he'd hoped for that answer and he was lucky enough to get it.
"I won't push you, but if you're willing, let me kiss you?" You asked.
He didn't need to be asked twice, he frantically nodded. Clearly he'd been hoping for this, and was clearly exited. You giggled at his cute reaction.
"Thank you" you said.
You took his face in your hands and leaned up slightly to his height, placing your lips against his. You bet anything he was internally screaming right now. It was clearly his first kiss, he wasn't really sure how to react, but that didn't make it any less sweet.
He was just as sweet as the sugar he loved so much. And his kisses tasted like his favourite strawberry shortcakes.
