Chapter 20 | checking in

Start from the beginning

You'd admit even you were a little weary of what you ate. Even though you knew the killer hadn't even come into contact with you, you couldn't help but inspect your food before you took a bite just in case.

"Do you know how he got the poison?" Father asked.

"Not yet. That's all we know until we can act on the warrant and search his stuff. As well as being him in for interrogation. We bugged his house a while ago and all we've managed to get is causal conversations, so clearly he's careful about not saying a single word about it" you explained.

You and L hoped the bugs would pick up something, anything. But he lived alone so you hadn't had any luck picking up on conversations or anything yet.

"Other than that, we're just waiting for the next move. That's all we got so far" you said.

"You've gotten really far pretty quickly. Well down honey, although you ARE working with L so you've probably got a head start huh?" Dad replied.

"Oh yeah he's just as amazing as all the rumours say. I can't believe how quickly he makes connections and thinks of solutions"

"What's he like? If we're allowed to know. He is one big secret to the public after all, it's wild that he let you meet him"

"He's... I don't even know how to describe him. And enigma, but in good way. Not what I expected at all, for one he's only in his 20s which is nuts"

"Woah- he is? That's so young! And he's solved all these cases already?" Father marvelled.

"I know it's crazy how smart he is. He's also nothing like you'd expect, he's the most causal detective I've ever met. You know how usually they're all professional in suits and ties and have their big fancy briefcases and stuff? Yeah he's worn jeans every single day of this case"

You could see the confusion on your dads faces, not expecting the big, powerful, mysterious L to be some causal, young super smart guy. Just like you they expected him to be some wide old man in a suit with a magnifying glass and brief case.

"He's literally addicted to sugar as well. You should see the amount of damn cake he eats! And somehow he's an absolute stick! I could break his damn arm with my bare hands if I wanted to. He's such a weird guy, but in a fun way. He's cool, I hella like him. Then again, I always have liked the charmingly strange ones" you said.

"That you have, all your childhood crushes were on the 'weird kids" dad replied.

"Also I found out why he picked me to begin with. I'm kind of honoured by it actually..."

"Ooh, what's the reason?" Father asked.

"He's mute. Only partly but it's bad enough he didn't say a single word to me for the first few months of knowing each other. We communicate through writing. That's also partly why he's anonymous, he can't talk to strangers so he uses text to speech and emails to talk to taskforce members. It took literally months for him to even say one word to me but he's making good progress. He picked me because after seeing I work mainly in discrimination cases, he figured I wouldn't discriminate him for his condition. Which I didn't" you explained.

"Aww! So you are making yourself known as a ray of sunshine! I always told you working on cases like that would make people feel safer with you" dad replied.

There was definitely truth to that. Every time you've had to work with the victims family they'd been more inclined to trust you over the police, because you'd proved yourself in the past to be a non-discriminative person. There's major perks to being seen as a safe person, people are much more inclined to trust you and as a detective that's exactly what you want.
