"Alright, let's get home then" Roger said.
Piling everything and yourselves into the car, you were off through Winchester to god knows where. You didn't have many details, L had been a bit maxed out on his words recently. Maybe it was the stress of flying to another country for a dangerous case or maybe it was the fact he was anxious about telling you all his dark past secrets. Either way you didn't mind as long as he was doing ok, plus you'd be finding out soon.
He hadn't spoken much the past week actually, he just hadn't really had the mental energy. It resulted in the ink in his strawberry pen finally running out from all his writing messages. He switched to a Korilakkuma one you'd won him at the arcade. Looking back you went a bit nuts on those claw machines...
The drive through the city was rather quiet, everyone being tired from a long flight. But it didn't seem to take that long, maybe it was just you being tired and not processing time right but the drive felt rather fast. And soon you were out of the suburban areas and into the more countryside like landscape. Down a long road with scattered buildings and properties you noticed L seemed rather happy, the nostalgia of the route making any homesickness he had fade away. You liked seeing him happy... he had a beautiful smile.
You passed a vineyard with a winery with acres of grapevines, and saw a graveyard just up the road. But you turned into a properly right between them and when you saw the sign it all clicked into place.
Wammys house orphanage for gifted children.
'Home' for L was the place he grew up. Even if it wasn't a regular family household.
The building looked old, study and clean but old. The architecture gave you 50s vibes, maybe that's when it was built. Behind the two bug almost gothic looking gates was a large front yard with various toys scattered around it from kids playing during recess and lunch. There looked to be a school building connected to the main one and it was tall enough to clearly be multiple stories.
Being cold and the afternoon you assumed that the kids must be inside and in class or something, as the yard looked completely empty. The car parked by the building and the gates closed behind you.
"Alright, now do you need a map of the building guys? You haven't forgotten everything have you?" Roger joked.
"Roger I built the place, I'm pretty sure I know my way around" Watari replied.
He build it? He ran the place? Wow. You never knew that, you knew he had a knack for inventing things but you didn't think he made a whole orphanage and ran the place. Although it made sense... L did say he was taken in by Watari.
Getting out of the car and beginning to unpack your bags you kept stopping to look around. You'd only ever been to one orphanage, the one you stayed at as a baby. But you were so little and your dads adopted you so young you didn't remember it. So this was like seeing an orphanage for the first time for you. Let alone one for gifted children. As you pulled your suitcase from the car and gazed around the property, something caught your eye.
Standing by the front door and watching you, were three kids. Probably curious to see who had come to their orphanage out of the blue.
"Something feels weird..." L spoke up.
"Like what?" Watari asked.
"I haven't been tackled by three menaces yet"
"That'll be because they're spying on you, bet they didn't expect you to bring someone else"
L looked over at the doorway, and immediately smiled. He glanced over at you, then back at the kids.
"They won't bite, they're with me. Come on..." he said.
