You could feel a presence approach you, and heard soft footsteps and sniffling behind you. Knowing it'd be one of the kids, you turned and found none other than Rosie, in tears and clearly upset.
"Oh Rosie! What happened baby?" You asked.
She lifted up her arm to reveal a big cut on it, one that she'd definitely gotten playing outside and tripping over it running into something.
"Aw sweetheart... I'll get a Band-Aid, sit with L ok? I'll be right back" you said, getting up to get a few first aid supplies.
She shuffled over to L, who picked her up and sat her in his lap. He reached for a tissue to stop the bleeding and gently held it to her arm. She pressed her fingers together, signing "ouch!" At him.
He singed back, a circular motion over his chest to say "sorry".
They could have basic conversations with sign language now, bigger words still had to be written down to communicate, but she was doing well so far and learning quickly. She already knew basic greetings and manners, every day phrases and a few things to do with topics she liked. She could get a general message across.
Taking another tissue, L gently wiped the tears from her eyes and she started to calm down knowing she'd be alright. She quite liked L, she could relate to him with mutism, she was grateful to him for teaching her how to deal with it, and she found some of his strange habits kind of funny. In a way, he kind of reminded her of her dad...
You returned with some bandaids and disinfectant, and got to work patching her up. When you wiped the disinfectant over the cut, she flinched and whined a little at the sting, but allowed you to continue knowing it was only going to help her. Covering the cut with two bandaids, she was all patched up and would be healed in no time.
"There we go, all done! You'll be better before you know it" you smiled.
She looked up at you, then over to L. She wanted to say something but the words wouldn't come out of her throat, and she didn't know how to sign it yet. But clearly there was something else she wanted. Every time her parents patched her up, there was something else they did to make it all better and she was confused why you hadn't done it.
"What's up?" You asked, noticing her confusion.
She paused a moment, trying to think of how to communicate it. A lightbulb went off over her head as she realised, and leaned down to kiss her Band-Aid.
"Oh! You want me to kiss it better?" You giggled.
She nodded, clearly used to her parents doing that for her.
"Alright, how could I forget?" You agreed, placing a quick kiss on her Band-Aid.
She gave you a smile, feeling much better. But she wasn't done yet, she held her arm up to L, wanting one from him too. L pointed at himself in confusion and she nodded in return.
"Do what she girl says L, make it better" you snickered.
Well, how could he say no to making it all better?
He kissed the Band-Aid too, and was met with a bright smile from Rosie and a sign of "thank you".
As if you two weren't being parental enough before... but how could you deny her? You just wanted her to feel better after everything that she'd been through.
"All better?" You asked.
She nodded happily, kicking her little legs in joy.
"That's good, want to go back and play or stay here and rest for a bit?"
She pointed to here, and stayed sat in L's lap.
"Alright, you can watch us work if you want. Or you can draw in your notebook" you said, turning back to your computer.
She'd never seen you and L work before, she knew you were detectives but she had no idea how being a detective really worked. L pulled his chair back into the desk and Rosie put her arms up on it to watch as he worked at his laptop, wondering what all the tabs and windows he had open were. There were a lot of words she didn't really understand on the screen, but she was still intrigued.
She looked up at L, and caught his attention. He looked back down at her and gave her a smile.
She took a second to remember the right gestures, and gave him another sign, "catch-bad-guy?"
L nodded, and she eagerly went back to watching the screen wanting to see how the bad guys got caught. You glanced over at them, a smile creeping on your lips.
Man... if you and L ever decided to be parents, he'd be such a good dad.
