L nodded approving of the idea, it made sense to keep everyone using similar gestures so nothing got mixed up.
Rather than sitting around in bed all day, you figured you should probably get up and have some breakfast first. So you had Rosie run back to her room to get dressed for the day while you and L did the same and got some breakfast. After that you could do a little sign language class.
The halls were quiet at the moment, as all the kids were off in class and the staff off with them or in their offices. As you took the empty breakfast plates to the kitchen, you ran into Watari making some coffee.
"Ah, good morning (y/n). Finally up" he said.
"Good morning, the bell actually woke me up this time surprisingly" you replied.
"Please tell me L got at least a LITTLE sleep?"
"He did, don't worry. He's teaching Rosie more sign language today"
Watari had been quietly watching him these past few months on this case, he found it astounding how quickly he warmed up to you and was able to talk to you, so he was interested to see if he could do the same with Rosie since the two has a special connection.
"You know when he first heard he'd be teaching the boys when they were younger, he was terrified he'd be bad at handling kids. But look at him now, babying those kids like they're his own" Watari smiled.
"I know, he's such a dad. He'll never admit it though" you replied.
"We both know he loves them. He probably got that from me since I took a liking to him when he first came here. I just had to care for him, he was such an interesting kid"
That was the funny thing you'd noticed about wammys kids. Even if no one was related by blood or legally family on paper, everyone acted like it. Older kids would adopt younger ones as a little sibling figure. Some of the staff treated particular kids like their own. Younger kids looked up to older ones like big cousins. In a way everyone had a found family like connection. You found it cute, and you were glad people were understanding the importance of found family. You weren't related to your dads by blood but they were always going to be your dads.
Family doesn't have to be related, just deeply loved and cared for.
"He's definitely interesting, I'll give you that" you replied.
"I bet he'll warm up to her quickly, be able to talk before he knows it. And who knows, maybe with his help Rosie will be able to talk too" Watari replied.
"I hope so, I really do..."
Having to go back to work you both parted ways and you went to the makeshift taskforce room you had in a study room. You'd get a start on work while L taught Rosie, but while you waited for your computer to boot up, you couldn't help but watch them.
On the whiteboard L had written everyone's names and drawn little stick figure interpretations of each sign for them, going through each one to teach Rosie them.
Yours was the tapping on the chest.
Wataris was pointing to the bridge of the nose, since he always wore glasses and that's where they sat.
Matt's was emulating holding a video game controller.
Mellos was tracing the collar of your shirt, as he often wore necklaces or his rosary.
Nears was linking two fingers together like two puzzle pieces clicking together.
Linda's was emulating the strokes of a paint brush.
And L's, of course was making the letter L with your fingers. As to be expected.
The spot under Rosie's name was blank, she was yet to make up a sign for herself.
She was quick to pick up each name, and learn the sign for them. They were all relatively simple gestures so she could remember them all fairly easily. And when they reached her own name, L gestured for her to come up with something.
She had to sit and think for a moment, trying out doffing gestures to see which one was right for her. She knew it should be something that has to to with her or something she liked so people would remember that gesture is her name, so she tried to decide on something she knew people would associate with her.
It took a moment for her to decide, but when she finally came up with it, she lit up in excitement. Looking up at L to write it down, she'd made her decision.
Her sign would be like throwing a bouquet. Because her name is Rosie and Roses are flowers that people usually used in a bouquet toss. Start with your hand slightly down like you're holding the bouquet, then quickly bring it up slightly and release your hand as if you've thrown the bouquet.
It didn't take L long to figure out what she was referring to, and found it a pretty smart idea. Flowers would make total sense to reference her name being a literal flower. Plus, it was kind of cute she associated flowers with the romance of weddings. Maybe one day she'd be able to throw a real bouquet, or maybe catch one when you and L eventually got married.
L drew a little stick figure doodle of it under her name, officially making her her name sign.
She clapped in excitement with a big smile, glad to finally have her own name sign. L ruffled her hair and gave her a smile back.
You just watched, not getting in the way of their little class. The two of them would absolutely be talking to each other one day, you could just tell.
