Aris' POV
The room is a quiet symphony of anticipation and eagerness. Mason stares at me intensely as I shrug to the question he asked me moments before. "Y/N Paige?" Mason stated again as the two guards stand on either side of me. My hands are restrained to either side of the chair. "Nope. Doesn't ring a bell." Mason looks up to the guard on my left before electrical charges are sent throughout my body. The pain expands from my stomach to my legs as the guard presses the electric weapon into my skin. Mason stands up slamming his hands against the table. "Doesn't ring a bell? You were in the Maze with her!" The shocking stops momentarily as I struggle to catch my breath. Beads of sweat trickle down my forehead. I lift my head making intense eye contact with him. "Never heard of her." Masons fury echos through the bright room around us. "Give me that." Mason rips the shocking stick from the guards hand before sticking the end back into my side. My eyes tightly shut in agony and delusion begins to bleed into my mind. A loud thump occurs after the electrical waves end. My eyes open the weapon broken on the white tile. Mason pulls me towards him by the collar of my shirt. "You're just like him! You won't speak! We will pluck that brain dry even if it means killing you." Mason shoves me away, "Get him out of my sight." The guards begin untying me. "Just like who?" I stop to think about who he is talking about. Mason's frustration lingers before he pushes his way out of the room.
The guards escort me down the hall of the hospital without restraints. I guess I'm lucky for that. We never left the building, but I don't think Y/N will be able to get to me. This area is completely blocked off and security is everywhere. At this point, I'm lucky if I get out of here alive.
As we walk, endless doors to cells fill the capacity of the hallway. The guards have not spoken while their faces are covered by masks. Much like the guards from Ava Paige's city. Looking in each cell, there is an individual either sitting, standing, or laying on the cold concrete. Barely any furniture or comfort items. We walk as a slow pace down the hallway getting a long look at what I'm about to feel like in a few minutes... assuming I'm fortunate enough to escape the pestering questions. Then I see what appears to be my eyes tricking me. Dark brown eyes lay upon me, and my heart falls into my stomach. I stop walking continuing to stare at the ghost before me. "Keep moving." The guard gives me a warning push to my back. "Aris." His British voice rings throughout my ears. And I realize that this is reality. I realize that I am not seeing a ghost. Newt is standing before me behind bars of the Wicked facility. I immediately grab onto the bars of his door looking at the dead man before me. "How?" Is all I manage to speak. The guards begin yelling but my focus remains on him. The guards start to pull at my arms. "Where is she?!" Newt meets me at the bars with wide terror in his eyes. "Here. She's here. But she's in danger." Before I could say anymore, I am ripped from the boy who died in front of Y/N's eyes that night.Y/N's POV
"So... what's the plan?" I question Rowan as he tears his office apart looking for something. "You need equipment right?" He looks up at me for a moment before continuing his search. "Yea." I state blatantly. Suddenly, Rowan pulls out a card from the depth of his drawers. "There's a reason you weren't able to find any of it."
"There." Rowan states looking over at the double doors I've had my suspicions about all along. We stand in the lobby trying not to look suspicious. I have a clipboard in my hand 'checking over the patient list'. "I knew those doors looked suspicious from day one." I state looking up at him. "Look... there's not just the equipment down there. There is... more." A puzzling look grows across my face. "More?" A nod is all he gives me. Something tells me he is reluctant to enter those doors. There is a fear in his eyes that I've never seen before. "Hey." I state gently touching his shoulder. His eyes fall onto mine as I feel a warm tingling sensation in my stomach. "In and out. We get the equipment, get Aris, and go." He smiles before walking over in the direction of the double doors along with the guard. Bold letters read 'Authorized Personnel Only' on the door. "ID please." The guard states as Rowan passes him the card from his office desk. The guard looks over at me from the plastic card. "She can't go in. Just you." He points. Rowan shakes his head, "Special orders from Mason. I'm training her as a Physician Assistant." The guard stares at him for a moment before sliding the ID card into the slot and stepping aside. After walking through the double doors and shutting behind us, Rowan stops my pace with a hand on my shoulder. "Y/N, there is more than just equipment down here." Before he says anymore I shake my head. "We don't have the time. We need to get in here, escape with Aris and the others. Whatever is down here, I can handle it. I promise." Without another word, we are left descending down the staircase to the secrets hidden behind Wicked's scheme. When I step on the ground level of the basement, I knew exactly what Rowan was referring to. I had seen this before, and my heart aches at the dozens of children strung on the wall. Not dead but not alive either. The blue substance being sucked out of their bodies and distributed across the city. I feel frozen in time witnessing countless lives being stripped overtime. This has been the solution all along. Daily injections of serum being created underneath a foundation of lies. I turn my head over to Rowan as he quietly packs equipment into the duffel bag. The equipment is stored in a large case with no kind of restricted access. I guess seeing as we are already in the restricted area. Wicked wants to be the hero. There could have so many doctors out there that found a solution to the Flare. Opportunities for a normal life, yet Wicked wanted the victory. Even if it means sacrificing a whole generation for it. "You knew about this?" My voice echos in the silence of concrete walls. He doesn't say anything. His body freezes as his grip tightens on the cabinet handle. I feel tears start to well up into my eyelids. I rush over to a boy plastered onto the wall. His eyes are closed while his arms hang loosely at his sides. I touch his face. "Wake up. Please." Silence. I move to the young girl next to him. She has blonde hair and rosy cheeks. I take hold of her shoulders shaking her. "Please! Wake up." Suddenly, I feel a tight grip behind me. Rowan turns me towards him and pulls me into his broad chest. A comforting gesture not right for any of the emotions I'm feeling. I use the palms of my hands to push him away from me. "You knew about this, and you did nothing!" I shout pointing towards the empty souls lingering around the room. "You think I had a choice?!" Rowan fired back. "Everyone does!" Instantly I feel my legs begin to shake. Hesitation fills me; should I even trust him. "You could have left. Found another city to work for. Built up a resistance against Wicked. Something!" He walks towards me again but with anger this time. "You think it's just so easy to leave here don't you? You found your way in and out. You got lucky! Wicked is a power hungry title that has engulfed our world. Even if I did find a way to escape here, everyone believes in Wicked. Not all of us had the luxury to feel freedom on a distant island!" I close the remaining gap in between us, "Thats not fair! I didn't want to end up on that island. I had the worst day of my life and woke up without parents, a sister, or the love of my life! I woke up realizing that I could have saved everyone all along. That I could have prevented this!" I take a breath motioning over to the horror filling this room. "You and I Y/N are not that different! I can't leave here. My mother bribed Mason to let me become a doctor so that she didn't have to loose me in the Maze. Don't think just because you were tortured in the Maze doesn't mean you are the only one who's lost people! Who has encountered tough decisions that led to hurting others. Just because I didn't do anything about this before," He dramatically waves his hand around the room, "doesn't mean I'm not doing anything about it now! I had no one before. How far would I have gotten?" I stare at him with fury in my eyes. Rowan takes a deep breath and looks back up at me. These are the same hurting eyes at before. He puts the duffel bag on the ground and completely closes the distance between us. "Y/N," Rowan grabs my face with his hands. "I promise. With everything I have and everything I am. I will free each and every one of these kids. Right now, we have to get you out of here." Staring into his eyes, I know he is genuine. I know he cares, and I know he wants freedom for everyone just like I do. All I can do is nod with a breath of relief from my lungs. Rowan looks between my eyes and my lips. He leans in slightly giving me the ultimate choice. Everything that has happened. After this is all over, Newt is still gone. He was my first love, but he doesn't have to be my last. I have to allow myself a chance at happiness with someone else. Someone who will love me almost as much as he did. But that's the thing. No one will ever even come close. And even if they do, I don't think I would be questioning whether or not they are the right one. I pull back from Rowan's grasp as my body wonders if I'm making the right decision. I see the disappointment in his expression, but we both know now is not the time. If he really feels for me as he says he does, then he will wait until I can prove that he is the one for me. "We better get going." I state to break the silence. He nods, escaping an inner trance, and picks up the duffel bag. "After you." He motions to the stairwell. As I walk past him, I feel a tight tension between us. I look up at him again before giving him a slight kiss on the cheek. With that, we make our way back to a defensive reality where emotional feelings must be put aside.
I slowly open the door leading to the lobby, but it's practically empty. The receptionist is still there, yet the guard from before is gone. Rowan follows me out with the bag in hand. "Okay, I'm going to go secure this in my car. We will figure out where Aris is and get out." He starts to walk away when I catch up to him. "You're just going to leave me?" He smiles softly, gently grabbing my hand. "My car is right out front. I'll be back before you know it." As he walks away, his hand slips from mine, and I'm left in the lobby by myself. Everything is too quiet. There were patients waiting in the lobby when we went downstairs. We were only down there for about 10 minutes. How could they have possibly gotten every patient into a room within 10 minutes? I take another look around. Unless they didn't. "Y/N Paige." A familiar voice calls from the distance. I spin around to see Mason accompanied with multiple Wicked guards. Including the guard standing watch by the lobby door. "My my aren't you a sight for sore eyes." Mason clasps his hands together as his wall of men stand before me. "Just let him go Mason. Let me go and all of us. We don't ever have to see each other again." This gets a chuckle out of him. "You really think I'm just going to let you all go. Not a chance." His guards begin to advance on me when I put my hands up. "Please, they didn't do anything! If I go with you, then you'll let them go. All of them." Mason understands what I mean by all of them as his eyes trail behind me to the double doors. "This isn't a negotiation Y/N." He tilts his head in a taunting way. "Please." I look around as I see Rowan standing at the entrance watching this all happen. Please, stay back Rowan. I give him a look to hopefully get the message across. "I will go with you. I won't try and run. You'll have what you wanted all along. Just please... let them go." Mason looks over at his colleagues as if he is actually debating my proposal. At least this way they can all live a world away from Wicked. All of them can. And if the extraction kills me, at least I can rest peacefully knowing all of my friends are free from harm's way. "Interesting bargain, but I think we'll just take you instead." Suddenly, a stinging sensation enters my neck. My vision begins to flash with colors. My blinking becomes fully apparent. I watch Rowan grab his hair as if he will pull it out. But it doesn't matter. None of it does. Especially when I begin to lose feeling in my legs as my body collapses to the floor.
