"Whatever man, they don't pay us enough for these pointless tests!"
I can't argue with him on that. We lose more lives than gain more intel.
"Take your walk. If you need us, we'll be right here around the corner," Lawrence reassured him.
"It's appreciated, but like I said, I won't. In fact, I'd feel safer if you three were outside."
"I'm just following my orders."
"Yes, well, remember what I said. Please, be silent."
"Of course."
We watch him walk down the frozen tunnel to SCP 1836's chamber, his footsteps becoming fainter as he disappears around a corner.
Lawrence then turns to us. "So Carson, Y/n, you two been here a while?"
"Three years," I replied.
"Could be worse I suppose?"
Carson says, gesturing at him. "Well yeah, that's pretty clear. I mean, look at you."
At the mention of his facial features, he glances to his side. A person can tell he isn't proud about what caused him to appear this way.
What the heck, baby bro?
I stare at him in disbelief, he doesn't seem to acknowledge my frown as he loses interest in the conversation. After some time, Lawrence gazes up, Carson's statement no longer bothering him.
We remain standing in the passage, not one of us saying anything else to the other as we wait for the shaman to return, the seconds stretching on.
A thought from earlier must have come to Lawrence, he asks us. "Say, earlier the shaman said Sedna. What did he mean by that?"
I responded to that as best I could. "Hell if we know? The tribes here have their own set of beliefs, probably has something to do with that."
"You two don't find any interest in that?"
Carson tells him. "It's a whole nother world up here man. This isn't our land and that's the reason this iceberg lady is pissed off to begin with. And I say, so be it! It's none of our business being here anyway."
"I think I actually agree with you?"
"Wait. Why do you say that like it's surprising?"
I don't even add anything to that as I lean back against the frozen wall, letting my mind tune out my surroundings, trailing off into a trance.
He's so unaware of what he says sometimes, most of it is right anyway. *sigh*
Time passes in a blur; the world around me slows down, minutes become hours... In reality, it's only been a couple of minutes. Suddenly, my daydreams are interrupted as the iceberg starts to shake; gently at first but abruptly turns violent, ice cracks and strikes the ground.
"Hey, do you hear that?" Lawrence asked, puzzled.
I spring up, immediately realizing what's going on. We're not doing this again.
"Oh, hell no! We're getting out of here!"
"What! Carson, Y/n, what's happening?"
"She's angry. Very angry. Uh, even pissed I'd say," Carson explained.
"We have to help the shaman."
This dude did sign his death wish.
"Are you serious? You heard the guy, we can help him by getting out here," he reminds him.
"We can't just leave him here."
Out of pure instinct, I grab Carson's wrist. I'm not letting my brother get caught in this dilemma again.
"*scoff* Watch us. Come on, baby bro!"
I raced past him, dragging Carson behind, almost making him trip before letting him go to run beside me.
We hear him state in the distance. "Fine then, I'll do it on my own!"
I take a brief glance back and see him hurry off to go help the shaman, disappearing around the same corner he did.
Once he's out of our sights, we turn our attention to running. The trembling grows as we sprint, similar to an earthquake, more ice splits and strikes the ground, creating hazards in our road to the exit. Additional cracking occurs from above; big icicles fall and almost hit Carson, but he dodges them, they split the area where he once was.
The end of the tunnel comes into our vision, prompting us to increase our speed; stepping out onto the bridge connecting to the iceberg. The second we're out, large chunks of ice come down in front of the entrance, blocking access to the caverns.
The Foundation's not going to make any expeditions for a while.
We stop to catch our breath; well, as best as we can with our helmets equipped. Realistically, removing our masks would help, but we wouldn't do that anyway, particularly Carson. I lean against the railing, clutching my chest as Carson collapses onto the causeway.
I manage to say, in between breaths. "Well.. *gasp* ..There goes two more.."
"Eh.. *gasp* ...It was bound to happen."
My expression switches to annoyance; I glare at him. Finally, he notices my displeasure and puts his hands up, clearly surprised at my irritation.
"What? It's true! He stayed behind to help him, which got them killed!"
He lowers them, pushing himself onto his feet as I roll my eyes. Of course, he'd say something like that.
MTFs and security guards approach us from the nearby Site-641, the vibrations must have alerted the whole Site. They question us on what had occurred and check if we need medical attention while others inspect the pieces obstructing the opening. Just as quick as they came, they leave without another word, having a full report on the incident.
Carson looks at me. "So, early break?"
"What the heck, we got nothing else to do for a while."
We walked down the path and into the Site. Above us, the northern lights illuminate the night sky, bringing a sense of calm and tranquility; relieving myself from the tragedy that just took place.
