Carson's POV

I awake to the sound of my alarm clock blaring. I groan as the noise penetrates my eardrums. I shift my covers and look at the clock. I reach for the off button. Once done so, I lay back and sigh. "Better get ready."

I sit up and stretch, my body straining as my limbs move after so long. I glance out of the window, the sun rising past the horizon. I smile, at least it's a beautiful day. I get out of bed, my uniform on top of my desk. I quickly change and exit the room.

I ask myself while strolling down the corridor to the cafeteria. "Alright, what's on the agenda today?" I know Y/n and I have separate shifts for the day but we planned to meet up at our break. I think she told me she's supposed to be on standby duty.

Upon entering the cafeteria, I see Y/n. She's sitting at one of the tables, her breakfast in front of her barely touched. She's staring down, appearing to be in deep thought. I grab some food and approach her, she doesn't notice me. "Hey sis...?"

She gazes up and notices me. "Hey baby bro." I sit across from her. "You okay, looking depressed lately?" She glances away. "It's... something.. I rather not talk about..." She stands abruptly. "Anyway, I got to go! Shift starts soon."

She hurries away, throwing her scraps into the trash can as she makes a beeline for the exit. Without much thought, I start eating my meal. After twenty minutes, I finish and dump my remains also. I head for the briefing room to start my shift.

Time Skip

I'm nearing the end of my shift, these hours were probably my slowest ever. I feel myself give a yawn as I stand in the middle of the corridor, outside of an Scp cell. I got stuck with guard duty again. I swear the site director is giving us the same assignments so we'll be useful.

Soon, I feel a vibrating sound in my pocket. I take out my phone, the alarm I set to end my shift. I turn it off and put it away. "Shift's finally over. Time to meet up with Y/n." We agreed to meet up at the staff break room. I turn and head down the hall.

I enter the room and look around, I don't see her. I sit on one of the couches and turn on the TV. After a few minutes, I glance at the clock, 1:37 p.m. She still hasn't arrived. I straighten up. "Ok, where is Y/n? She never takes this long." Come to think of it, I haven't seen her since this morning. And even she would check on me at least twice. This is concerning.

I try to calm myself. "She's probably late or something." Yeah, that's it... Then again, she was acting weird earlier. I should go find her. I turn off the TV and head out the room and into the hallway. I stroll around the site in search of her. After a while, I enter the armory. She's nowhere in sight... but I see Lawrence. He's polishing some guns on a nearby table. Maybe he's seen her.

I call out to him. "Hey Lawrence!" He puts the pistol down and turns toward me. I ask while approaching him. "You seen Y/n?" He thinks for a second. "No... Isn't she usually with you?" "Well, not today," I explain. "Checked her room? She might be there." "Not yet.. Thanks!"

I exit the room and head for the on-site dorms. Her room is farther down the hall from mine so I don't walk by it often. I see her door and approach it. I stop outside and knock on the door. "Sis, you in there?" No response. I knock again, a little louder. Still nothing.

I open the door and enter. Nothing appears out of place, her bed is freshly made, desk is organized, wardrobe isn't a mess, nothing to suggest anything off. "Where is she?" I almost leave the room... but my eyes stop at her mattress. "Wait... What is that?" There's something sticking out from under her mattress. I bend over and lift it up. I grab the thing and hold it in my hand and my eyes widen. "Oh my god!"

This paper is a photo of me as a baby, wearing a blue onesie, my mom holding me in her arms, a tired but happy smile across her face. A photo I thought was lost years ago. "That little... She kept it? Without my consent!"

I stand up. "I'm going to give her a stern talking to once I find her." Glancing back at her mattress, I notice another piece of paper sticking out. I pick it up, angrily. "Great, what other pictures does she... What?" This is a portrait of our parents holding each other lovingly, as happy as ever. "Why does she... Wait! What day is it?"

I take out my phone and check the date. "Holy... That explains why she's been ghosting me." How could I have forgotten... then again, we try not to talk about them. I put my phone away and sigh. "I should go talk to her... where would she go though?" Hmm... The rooftop! Places with scenic views always remind her of home.

I hurry out of the room, making sure to put away all the photos before bolting. I speed down the corridor, in the direction of the nearest staircase. I open the door and dash upward, another door soon appearing before me. I open it and step out, the fresh air hitting me as I exit. I can see why she likes it up here so much.

I scan the rooftop. "She has to be here... somewhere." I walk around, my eyes searching for any evidence of her presence. Eventually, I see a figure in the distance, leaning against the railing facing the skyline. I call out to it. "Sis?..."

It turns and Y/n is presented before me. I knew she would be here. She asks, confused. "Hey baby bro... What are you doing here?" "It's almost 2 p.m., we were supposed to meet together for our break, remember?" She realizes what I'm referring to. "Oh... right. Well, you see.. I... uh..." I sigh. "I know what today is." She stops stuttering and goes quiet.

I walk over and stand beside her, looking at the skyline. She turns back to it. We watch the scenery in complete silence as the clouds in the distance start fading away. "Nice view..." I mutter. Y/n slumps on the rail, clearly sadden. "Yeah... reminds me of home." I glance at her. "Is the accident still bothering you?"

🚩

She looks down. "It's just... After rethinking my decisions as a kid..." She puts her hands on her head and sighs. "I spent so much time raising you, I forgot to raise myself. I pretended to be happy, so you could be happy." I only sigh. She's right. Uncle Evans always left us alone, she practically took care of me... but lost most of her childhood. She collapses onto the rail. "I'm an idiot..."

🚩

I immediately stop her, putting my hand on her shoulder. "No you are not!" She stares up at me, expecting an explanation. "You kept me safe for years, even before we started working at the foundation. You are the greatest sister I could have asked for. Mom and dad said so themselves."

I take my hand off her. "It's not too late to relive the good old days." She thinks for a minute then straightens up. "You're right!" She embraces me, instinctively I wrap my arms around her, comforting her as she's done to me many times. "Thanks baby bro." I smile and hug her. "You're welcome." She opens her eyes and gazes down at me, a smirk falls across her face.

Without giving me time to react, she puts me in a headlock. She lifts her hand and starts giving me a hard noogie. "Don't think I won't be tempted to mess with you, I am your big sister after all." I say as I struggle against her grasp. "Ok, ok! I get the idea. Now let me go!"

She releases me from her grip and I stand up, adjusting my helmet. I motion to her. "Now, come on. We still have nine minutes left, might as well spend them together." We head in the direction of the stairs, all while Y/n seems to be thinking of something, another smirk across her face.
