April 1998
The next morning after breakfast, Lindsey and Stevie sat at the kitchen table, making a list of how they were going to handle their situation. It was surprisingly civil.
"Okay so, first thing on the agenda is you have to tell Kristen," Stevie said, as she was going over the actual list she had written down.
"Ummmm.....do I have to?" He asks.
"Yes. You didn't do anything wrong, Linds. We were back together and you and Kristen had broken up. She might be shocked and a little upset, but I really think she'll be understanding," Stevie said, trying to reassure him.
Lindsey takes a deep breath and nods, "you're right. What's next on the agenda?"
"I need to get ready to come home. I'll book my flight and make sure Karen picks me up from the airport," she writes something else down on her pad of paper.
"Are you sure you want to stay here another week?"
She looks up at Lindsey and nods, "I have to. My family needs to know I'm....stable enough to go home."
"Then why don't I stay with you?" Lindsey asks.
"Because you need to go home and tell Kristen that you and I are having a baby." She pauses for a moment and takes his hand. He's surprised that she's actually touching him, but he doesn't pull away, "Lindsey, are you worried I'm not going to come back?"
Lindsey doesn't say anything, he only nods a little.
She squeezes his hand gently, "I swear I will come home. You're right; it's unfair for me to stay here. I should be closer to you so you can see our baby whenever you'd like."
"What happens when the baby gets here?"
"My mother is going to come stay with me to help out."
Lindsey shakes his head, "let me stay with you."
Stevie laughs a little, "yeah, that'll go over with Kristen really well. You'll have a two month old son at home."
"She'll...be okay," Lindsey says without much confidence in his voice.
"If you think I'm going to let you do that, you're insane."
He takes a deep breath and runs his hand through his hair, mussing it up. Stevie reaches over to fix it for him. She seemed to be more accepting of touching today, as long as she was the one initiating it. He didn't want to push his luck.
"This isn't what I want," Lindsey looks at her, pleadingly.
