Chapter 21: Sol Regem

Start from the beginning

"We did it!" I heard Rayla shout happily before pulling me into a tight embrace. I was a caught a little off guard, but quickly returned the hug. We pulled away when Zym came between us and looked at us both with a happy gleam in his eyes.

Zym had landed on my back after being flying for a few seconds. He continued to practice his flying after that whole situation on the Moonstone Path. Rayla glanced towards me before walking ahead and turning around to face me. "This is it, Zaira. Xadia." She spoke outstretching her arms as if to present the area to me. The smile that had been on my face quickly faded when I glanced up to see a very large dragon laying down. I backed up a step or two, my eyes widened with shock and a bit of fear. Rayla looked confused before turning around and also spotting the massive dragon.

"Oh, no. It's him. Sol Regem."

The large dragon lifted its head and blocked part of the sun, I could barely make out a large red scar that was laid out over his eyes. He also had large horns over his face that were meant to resemble rays of sunlight. We quickly ran to find cover.

"That's no ordinary dragon."

"Has there ever even been an ordinary dragon?" Rayla completely ignored my comment and continued.

"His name is Sol Regem, the Sun King." She broke eye contact with me and looked up towards Sol Regem. "He was the king of the dragons a long time ago. But he was blinded when the wars began, and he's become a symbol of rage and bitterness."

"Great, an enormous, blind, angry dragon is blocking our path to Xadia. What do you suggest we do?" Rayla chuckled. "Well, we can't fight him, seeing as you've got your arrows and your cute blow spell," She spoke poking the top of my head before continuing. I felt a little offended with her comment on my arrows. "And my swords aren't fit to be his toothpicks." Rayla walked further behind the rock, she gently held her chin between her fingers as she thought of what to do.

"We'll have to sneak past him!"

"Zaira, it's time for you to get your first lesson in the ways of stealth." Rayla said crouching down beside me. I turned around towards her and playfully rolled my eyes. "Great, are we going to have an archery lesson next?" I said sarcastically, Rayla just gave me a gentle push before continuing.

"The secret of stealth is that you don't have to be invisible. You just have to be invisible to your enemy's senses."

"Right, and we know he's blind, so we don't need to worry about his sense of sight."

"Exactly. That leaves only two senses we need to fool, hearing and smell." I glanced down towards the floor.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there are five senses. We just covered three." I spoke, before instantly realizing how stupid that was. Rayla held her hand behind her back and leaned over. "Well, if it gets to his sense of touch, we're in big trouble." She said in an overly sweet tone as she touched the tip of my nose. "And sense of taste? Nice knowing you." As if on cue, Sol Regem let out a roar. "You know, all of this kind of sounds like Moon Arcanum stuff." I gently rubbed the top of Zym's head as I thought about it more.

"If you say so, mage."

My head instantly shot up I looked at Rayla, there was no way she didn't have a smug grin just plastered onto her face. I let out an irritated huff. "I'll have to kindly ask you to not call me that, elf." I heard her let out a soft snicker.

Zym started to get anxious, he would let out constant whimpers and tried to fly his way out of my arms. Rayla turned around towards us. "Come on, Zaira, try to keep him quiet." I nodded, and finally managed to get a better hold onto Zym. He looked up at me with wide eyes, I let out a soft sigh and pet the top of his head. "We're not going to let anything happen to you. Trust me." Zym let out a quiet whine before going quiet and staying still in my arms.
