Since our departure from Omashu, we hadn't had another run-in with Azula. This surprised me as I was sure she would come after Aang to one-up Zuko and prove her capability to her father. However, there was no sign of her. This did not deter me from being on high-alert as we traversed the Earth Kingdom in search for an earth bending teacher for Aang. Bumi had told Aang to find a teacher who 'listened to the earth' and in the past few days, we hadn't even come close to finding someone who matched that description. We did, however, convince an Avatar-hating town that Aang was not an evil murderer and also subsequently proved that Avatar Kyoshi was one. We had also got lost in a large swamp where we met some swamp-benders living deep within it. While we were there, the entire GAang was split up and we all admitted to having seen inexplicable things while in the swamp.
I had no idea where I was or where I was going but I knew I had to find where the rest of the GAang went. The swamp was humid and the air was making my hair stick to my neck as I walked upon its mushy floor, being careful not to step on any stray tree trunks. Something about this swamp was very eerie and the hair on my arms stood up as I called the names of my friends.
I saw something move in the corner of my eye and readied myself in a fighting stance in case of danger. As soon as I turned, the fight in my body dissipated and I fell to my knees.
It was my mother.
Tears pricked my eyes, "Mom?"
She was just as I remembered her, her warm smile eased my rapid heartbeat and I felt as if I was a child again. She had an ethereal light emitting from her body as she held her arms out, I rushed to embrace her but was met by a large boulder where she once stood. I looked around and she reappeared behind me and that's when it hit me.
"You're not real . . . " I looked at the ground.
"No, I'm not."
"You're just a product of the swamp, playing tricks on me."
She closed her eyes, "Not a trick, my dear. The swamp shows people who are kind to it what they want to see and guides them. While it shows the people who hurt it painful images from their past."
"Which are you?"
"I am here to guide you, (Y/N)."
I raised an eyebrow, "Back to my friends?"
"No. To where you truly belong," she paused and smiled, "With him."
She looked past where I stood and I turned around, seeing a man wearing dark clothes, his face hidden by a blue mask. I recognized him from his wanted posters as The Blue Spirit. He had the same glow as my mother, so I knew he wasn't actually here. I had no idea what this meant as I did not know the identity of the blue spirit. I had never even seen the guy in person for spirit's sake!
"I don't understand mother," I turned back to her, frustration becoming apparent in my voice.
"You will," With that both her and the Blue Spirit disappeared.
After meeting back with the GAang in the swamp, I decided to leave out the part of my vision that involved the Blue Spirit and only told them about seeing my mother. I didn't know why I left it out, but something told me to just keep it to myself. In the days after we left the swamp, what my 'mother' said was still plaguing my mind as I tried to decipher what it meant and how a wanted fire nation criminal connected to it all. Everytime I thought too hard about it my head would ache and I finally decided to just forget about it. I hoped that sooner or later it would all make sense and told myself I had to be patient.
