11. Confusion

Your eyes fluttered open, taking in the dawn. The lighting felt ethereal, as if your lowly apartment had gotten a brief glimpse of heaven. The room bathed in the warm glow, a sight seen rarely for such an awful area. Even the jolly puppet surveying the scene fit into it. A nice addition to the already wide array of hues.

This, was all in a stark contrast to the girl inhabiting the room. Your hair was greasy from not taking a shower for one day too long, and the newfound tangles in it did not help the situation. Your hairline was dotted with acne and a bit too much visible dandruff. Other than the bags that adorned your eyes, your face looked like the life had been sucked out of it. You didn't look like this everyday, but to be fair, you also weren't addicted to a neighborhood, talking to objects, and having nightmares everyday so, what did you know?

"Hello y/n, you look pretty," you heard the puppet's voice.

"Not in the mood for sarcasm," while you didn't usually speak much in the morning, you could make an exception.

"Oh, you're acting silly. Maybe you should go wash up." It was a bit concerning that the only one left to talk sense into you was a puppet, but that just confirmed you were going insane.

You went to the bathroom after grabbing some clothes. Brushing your teeth, and promptly taking a shower. Your bathroom was always a bit too warm and the shower too cold; a horrid combination. What could you do though?

You got dressed for work, which was in half an hour, and headed out. "Wally, you know I need to hand you in."

"But, it's scary there!"

"Uh, if I bring you, will you mysteriously disappear?" He meagerly nodded his head. "Okay then, but you have to come out sometime."

Walking downstairs was a pain, but the elevator was always broken. You headed into the parking lot and straight to your car. It was old, it was barely running, it looked like it hadn't seen the light of day in years, but it got the job done. Most days, you'd just take buses, but this would have to do for now. Starting up the car, you drove out into the street. You'd memorized the roads around your home for obvious reasons, but the Welcome Home facility was a bit difficult to get to. The road twisted and split into multiple forks. Like they didn't want anyone to find it.

The parking lot was empty, but that wasn't a red flag. Apparently everyone around here was extremely fit for a reason. Upon entering, people you didn't recognize flocked around you. You made out things like:

"You must be the new hire!"

And

"Do you have the puppet?"

And

"Where are the gloves?!?"

Okay, that last one had nothing to do with you, but still. "Hi, I'm y/n."

"Yes, yes. Follow me," finally, a familiar face! The Question-Answerer. You did as told, him leading you to a floor you'd never been to before. Taking the stairs down, you ended up on the basement floor.

The room was dimly lit, every few seconds a little tap could be heard from the leaky— everything. The room was covered with a glutinous, jet black, substance. The viscous liquid, for the most part, resided in a corner of the room, but small amounts of it were smeared everywhere. As soon as you entered, a horrid pain shot through your head.

"Ah," you groaned.

"This is where the first step of the restoration process begins," he said. Your mind became fuzzy, and without warning, a technicolor filter was thrown over the, already dimly lit, room.

"Y/n, are you alright?" He said. WHo wAs HE AnYWAyS? WhO DiD YOu kNoW THat WAs a hE? hMm, WaLLy? FRaNK, nOt HiM, hE dIDNt LikE YOU. Home? No, WAs HOmE A hE? MAybE...
