Caleb walked down the cobbled streets quietly, he was on his way to his hair appointment, that morning had been a chaotic one due to Jayden forgetting to do a piece of homework until last minute then making Caleb and Jason help him with it despite Caleb having an appointment and Jason having work.
Jason had been giving Caleb prolonged leave whilst the whole trial and murder investigation drama was unfolding, which Caleb appreciated, though some days he thought he might end up going in just for a distraction.
Due to that mornings chaos Caleb was running a bit late, which meant he was taking some short cuts whilst walking. One of them included a dingy alleyway that would take him to the high street rather than walking all the way round.
As he stepped into the alley he felt a pit building in his stomach, this alley was grotty to say the least, it winded through multiple buildings with trash cans plus bursting full trash bags lining the floor, litter also carpeted the concrete ground making Caleb uneasy.
He thought he could smell fresh cigarette smoke but the alley was deserted, shrugging it off Caleb paced through the alley.
Suddenly he felt an arm grab his back as he passed a trash can. Trying to turn he let out a scream which was muffled by a leather glove covering his mouth.
"Shut up" a man hissed in his ear the voice gruff as a cold dagger pressed to his neck, Caleb instantly stopped struggling going as still as a statue as the man pulled him backwards behind a big trash can.
"Give me your wallet" he hissed still pressing the dagger to Caleb's neck, he then loosened his grip allowing Caleb to move one of his arms, slowly Caleb went down to his pocket handing the man his wallet. He felt fear racing through him as the man pocketed the wallet.
"Phone" he snarled pressing the knife deeper into Caleb's skin making Caleb whimper softly.
"Shut up, give me your phone!" The man hissed quietly his saliva landing in dots on Caleb's face making him squirm more, he reached slowly back into his pocket handing the man his phone next. He was still in the man's grip.
"And I'll take this" the man stated pulling the engagement ring off of Caleb's finger roughly. Caleb felt tears spilling out his eyes as he watched the ring be pocketed. That was his, the ring Jason had proposed to him with.
"Please, you can have everything. Just not that" Caleb whimpered put quietly.
"Shut the fuck up!" The man whispered in his ear digging the dagger back in. Caleb froze again regretting speaking up, that ring meant everything to him though. He really wanted it back, however the man then leapt up dashing off down the alley leaving Caleb slumped on the floor of the dirty alley. The engagement ring was gone with the mugger.
Caleb scrambled up wildly glancing around then taking off sprinting back in the direction of his house, he arrived quickly hurrying inside, the guilt was building up heavily inside of him. He'd lost his ring, the thing Jason had bought him with his own saved up money. The thing her proposed to him with and spent days stressing over, He'd lost it.
As tears spilt from his eyes Caleb rushed up the stairs, he'd spotted the blue pick up truck in the drive so assumed Jason was back for his lunch break, not wanting to bump into his fiancé and confess what he'd let happen he rushed into the bathroom pulling the door shut quietly. He slumped onto the ground pulling his legs to his chest and sobbing bitterly.
It was all his fault. He deserved hell for this.
Guiltily he grabbed the razor blade from inside the cupboard. He quickly made a long, deep cut down his clean wrist, it seared with pain immediately but Caleb didn't stop, he continued to cut making more and more cuts red lines bubbling up on his snowy white skin.
Soon enough he was completely covered in fast running blood. It was creating a small pool beneath him on the floor and staining his shirt.
"Shit, shit" he choked out feeling his vision begin to fade, he was feeling so dizzy as pain shot through his wrist excruciatingly. Standing slowly up he stumbled out of the bathroom and down the stairs nearly tripping multiples times as he clung to the banister for dear life. He'd gone too far, further than he'd ever intended. This was bad.
A trail of red droplets followed him dripping from the cuts that snaked up and down his wrist. He burst into the kitchen staring around frantically. He spotted Jason in the corner on his phone waiting for the microwave to finish heating something up.
"Hey elf" Jason called out not looking up from his phone "did your appointment go okay?"
"Jason..." Caleb blurted out his tone laced with fear, Jason looked up and his expression turned as cold as ice.
"What have you done?" He asked stonily practically sprinting the short distance of the kitchen floor over to his fiancé.
"I'm gonna pass out, help me. I don't wanna die... please! I went too far!" Caleb begged his vision fading in and out.
"You're not gonna die, you're gonna be fine I'm calling an ambulance, stay with me Caleb. Fuck. I love you Caleb, elf. Please!" Jason begged right back holding onto Caleb firmly, Caleb felt his vision going completely as Jason's voice faded away.
"It was an accident- I- I swear, I'm sorry" Caleb blurted o it barely able to even hear his own voice now
Everything went black as the feeling disappeared from his skin. It now felt like he was floating in a void.
...
"Caleb get up" a voice whispered, Caleb had his eyes tight shut, a gut feeling deep inside him was screaming at him not to open them.
"Caleb, get up come on" the voice repeated urgently, it was a terrifyingly memorable voice. One that carried so many raw connotations with it, one he never thought he'd ever have to hear in real life again. A voice he thought would only haunt him in nightmares and flashbacks, but this was neither of those things.
Caleb flickered his eyes open his worst nightmare coming to reality, he was lay on the floor of a field. The sky was bright blue with a handful of cotton white clouds drifting across it, the sun was shining happily down creating a warm breeze. The grass swayed in the light wind making a whooshing noise which filled Caleb's ears from where he was lay on the floor, however what was directly above him was the scariest thing there. His dad. Mr Walters...
"Dad?" Caleb muttered scrambling to get up but being unable to, all he could do was lay there as his dad kneeled down on the grass beside him.
"I'm here" Mr Walters replied quietly.
"Please... dad... sir, please don't hurt me, not again please! I'm sorry I killed you- I- I'm so sorry" Caleb cried out, he wanted to cry so badly but tears refused to fall as he remained frozen in place.
"Shhhh Caleb, I won't hurt you. Not here" Mr Walters answered calmly. Caleb felt himself ease as his dad settled beside him. His expression was completely tranquil. His eyes kind and undisturbed. It was a strange sight to see, Caleb was so used to drunken fury.
"It's not your time Caleb. You have longer yet, I love you. Son" Mr Walters told him kindly.
"No you don't" Caleb retorted bravely.
His dad chucked slightly at this smiling broadly "It's okay. I understand"
"No you don't, not at all. If you did you wouldn't have done it" Caleb answered stubbornly.
A look of regret flashed through Mr Walters "Times nearly up Caleb, I forgive you for killing me, I love you boy. You make me so proud, i love you" he whispered out quickly, he then reached down and hugged Caleb.
Caleb flinched at first but then recomposed leaning into the hug. He'd always wanted this, always missed this. Parental love. It felt right.
