After a long week that felt like a tortured eternity for Caleb he was finally discharged from the hospital, his stitches had been taken out by this point and his wounds were healing well. It hadn't been as deep as it could've been.
Caleb was relieved to finally be leaving the stuffy hospital, he was sure Jason was too. His fiancé had loyally stuck with him throughout the whole admission never leaving his side once. Caleb still felt insanely guilty about losing the ring but he knew that wound would also heal with time just like his scars.
Unfortunately for Caleb his worries were far from over, tomorrow was the date the trial would officially be starting. He didn't even get 24 hours of peace before being thrown to the lions.
Mr Sanders had visited him twice since their initial meeting, they had constructed quite a good case for him that Caleb hoped would be enough to convince the jury of his not guilty plea.
Almost as if he could read Caleb's mind Jason passed him a sympathetic glance "Don't worry about the trial, I know that's easier said than done but please, enjoy this whilst it lasts" Jason told him kindly.
"I know, it's just... stressful" Caleb answered nodding his head his vibrant green hair tangling over his face. That was on their list of things to do that evening, he'd already rebooked his hair appointment and Jason would walking there with him taking no short cuts whatsoever. Especially not down any shady alleys.
"Definitely yeah, but there's nothing you can do about it today, just enjoy the day" Jason reassured him softly, his raven haired fiancé seemed to always know the right thing to say.
"Can we not go straight home? Could we like, go out somewhere just me and you first" Caleb requested glancing up at Jason hopefully.
"Of course, where'd you wanna go?" Jason replied a small smile resting on his face.
"I know the place" Caleb answered confidently, he leaned forward jabbing the name of his destination into the gps, it was very close by to their house anyway so it was fine.
"Good choice" Jason commented nodding in approval at the gps. Caleb just grinned back but a knot was tightening in his stomach at his decision, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to go through with what he had planned.
...
They soon pulled into their destination, it was the beach. The sandy shores they lived by. Often the coastline was deserted due to it being out of season for tourists, today was no different. There were only a few stragglers hanging around on the beach enjoying the rare burst of afternoon sunshine that had peaked through the fluffy white clouds.
Hopping out of the car the pair walked lazily towards the ocean, gazing out as it sparkled in the rare sunlight.
"It's beautiful" Jason commented taking Caleb's hand in his own, Jason's hold was soft and warm making Caleb feel completely safe with him. He knew the thing he was going to try do would be hard, but he had to do it.
"There are so many gulls" Caleb noted watching as the white birds circled around the beach searching for scraps of food left behind by picnickers.
"Don't get shit on" Jason replied making Caleb giggle.
"It's good luck though" he countered glancing at Jason "maybe that's what I need"
"If we're resorting to getting shit on by a gull to win this trial I think it's already over" Jason laughed back making Caleb smile further.
"You never know" he replied raising his eyebrows at Jason.
They walked in a comfortable silence hand in hand along the sandy beach, the ocean was as pretty as ever and seemed to sparkle extra bright that day.
"I want to try swim" Caleb admitted, Jason looked at him in surprise. In his whole time here Caleb had never once let himself swim due to having to be shirtless. The thought of showing off his scars even to a deserted beach was too much for him.
"Are you sure?" Jason whispered looking him dead in the eyes, his sapphire blue gaze was just like the ocean. Caleb felt like he could swim in Jason's eyes forever.
"I'm sure" Caleb answered quietly. Biting his lip anxiously.
Jason nodded and the pair stripped down to their underwear, Caleb hesitated at his shirt his mind racing, he had fresh scars now, he'd only just had stitches taken out. What if people saw? What if it hurt?
"You can do this" Jason whispered placing a hand momentarily on Caleb's shoulder. Caleb nodded taking a deep breath then tugging his shirt off. Jason gave him a supportive smile not even offering a second glance to the scars before leading the way into the water.
Caleb followed him feeling the cold, salty water lapping at his legs. He gasped as it hit him not expecting it to be so ice cold.
Suddenly the freezing water showered him covering his bare body, Caleb looked shocked staring at Jason who was smirking at him.
"You did not just splash me" Caleb whispered.
"Yes I did elf" Jason retorted smugly.
Caleb kicked out covering his boyfriend with water, Jason staggered back falling backwards into the sea and going under for a second before resurfacing. Caleb burst out laughing as Jason tried to scramble back up slipping on the sandy seafloor. A piece of seaweed was also stuck to his head which Jason peeled off in embarrassment.
"You bitch" Jason blurted out regaining his footing and splashing Caleb again, Caleb instantly splashed back laughing hysterically, he felt like a kid. It was a feeling he'd missed out on completely in his childhood. He wasn't even worrying about his scars, not even thinking about them. He was just having fun.
Eventually they backed out of the sea utterly soaked, Caleb glanced at Jason eyeing him up. His fiancé was even hotter when soaking wet, his boxers clung to his body and droplets slid down his chest.
"I was expecting the salt to... really hurt" Caleb muttered glancing away from Jason.
"I'm glad it didn't" Jason told him collapsing on the sand. Caleb sat down beside him feeling slightly self conscious and looking around the beach making sure no one was watching him, they weren't.
"Let's build a sandcastle" Jason suggested, Caleb nodded sitting up at the same time as his fiancé.
Together they gathered some sand together moving it around and clumping it together "four towers" Caleb ordered as they began to make the corners. It was much harder to do this without a bucket or spade but they managed. The sandcastle was haphazard to say the least, uneven and messy, but they'd made it work.
"I feel like a kid for the first time" Caleb told Jason softly, Jason put an arm around him happily making Caleb lean into his shoulder comfortably. They sat together on the sand as the sea slowly came in lapping at the beach until it reached the sandcastle. It toppled the towers first before enveloping the rest of the castle in salty water.
"Okay, let's go home now" Caleb whispered putting his clothes back on. He had dried off mostly now but the fabric of his underwear was still damp slightly, it was irritating but he ignored it.
"I'm proud of you elf, and whatever happens over the next week. I'll always love you" Jason assured him as they walked.
"I love you too" Caleb whispered back glancing playfully at Jason "thank you for sticking with me through... everything"
They slowly kissed bringing their lips together in a soft movement, Caleb felt Jason's hand travel down his body as he kissed him, he couldn't have a better fiancé if he tried. Jason was right. Whatever happened tomorrow and the rest of the trial week or weeks, it'd all be okay. He'd be okay.
