One Day At A Time - Revised Edition

Before they even sit down at the lunch table, Lucas looks at Ava and Lilly suspiciously.

It's not like they're holding hands or anything that outwardly says, "We're in love, everyone!" in big, bold letters.

He bluntly states to both of them,
"I might be crazy, but something's... different with you guys."
"What're you talking about?" Rose questions him.

Lucas sits up and claps his hands once, which unintentionally makes Ava flinch, and states the obvious.
"Lilly, you're wearing Ava's hoodie." then, "What'd you guys do after we left?" He's trying to sound serious, like a kooky detective piecing together a mystery.

The sweet smile that Lilly and Ava show to each other almost gives him his answer.

He laughs,
"You made out again, right? That's what happened?"

While it's a somewhat joking question, it prompts Ava and Lilly to look at each other, non-verbally figuring out who should tell him and Rose.

Lilly clears her throat briefly.
"We, uh, got together. That's what happened."

Both Lucas and Rose's eyes widen, but the former looks like his eyes are going to pop out of his head.

"Are you being serious?" The latter asks.
"Yep. We talked about it and we're together now."
Rose beams at them.
"I'm so happy for you both!"

"Holy shit, yes! It's about god-damn time!" Lucas exclaims.

Rose gets up from their seat and goes to give Ava and Lilly congratulatory hugs.
Lucas follows close behind them, giving out his own tight squeezes.

The energy at their table is abundant.

When everyone calms down, Lucas dramatically groans.
"Wait a minute, are Rose and I gonna be third wheels now?"
"You won't be third wheels. Everything will stay the same, alright?" Lilly reassures him.

"Alright, good, because I don't want you two getting all... coupley- PDA-y- while we're hanging out."
"We'll be good, Lucas." Ava tells him.

And that's that, their best friends know. Two people know, and that feels good.
