"JAY!" The scream ripped from Nya's throat as she watched her boyfriend fall to the ground limply. She rushed to his collapsed form, frantically checking for a pulse.
"Nya? What the hell just happened?" Cole cried as he noticed her crouched over Jay's body.
"He just collapsed- I don't-"Nya stuttered frantically. Cole sprinted into the cabin to find Zane.
"It was Jordana," Lloyd said gravely, crouching down beside her. "She sent some sort of spell your way and Jay intercepted it. It all happened so fast I didn't have time to..." He trailed off, staring sadly at Jay's unconscious form.
"THAT BITCH," Nya growled, grasping Jay's hand tightly. She tried to focus on him instead of the rage she was having a hard time keeping under control.
"Please Jay," she whispered desperately, "We just got you back."
"Nya, what happened," Zane demanded, dropping down beside her. Cole followed closely behind, trying to catch his breath. The other members of the team streamed on deck, crowding around them.
"FSM it's Jay," Kai breathed, eyes wide in disbelief. "What did they do to him??" Flames began to dance on his fingertips as his features darkened.
"Everyone, get out of the way!" Zane commanded, carefully scooping Jay into his arms. "His situation is critical. We need to prepare the med bay right now." Zane staggered slightly as he carried Jay into the Bounty's cabin. Jay had been a lot smaller the last time they had seen him. Nya rushed ahead to the med bay, quickly preparing all the equipment she knew Zane would need. Her mind was blank, shock and fear causing her thoughts to be drowned out by a deafening white noise that was ringing in her ears. Her hands flew over the equipment automatically. Zane gently settled Jay onto the bed, quickly connecting wires and hooking him up to a plethora of beeping machines. Nya couldn't look at him. He looked so pale and lifeless, almost as if he was already dead. She stumbled out of the room, sliding down numbly against the wall opposite to the med bay.
The entire team was gathered anxiously at the door to the room, watching helplessly as Zane scrambled to keep Jay's vitals stable. Kai noticed his sister slumped against the wall and sat down next to her. He didn't know what to say to her. She looked so scared, so vulnerable. Nya was never scared. Looking at her dazed face, he doubted any words would even break through to her. So Kai just took her hand, squeezing it gently to remind her she wasn't alone. He focused on staying strong for her so that he couldn't think about the fact that one of his brothers was so close to death. His stupid, loud mouthed, annoying brother that he wished more than anything in the world he could trade places with. Kai would do anything to be the one laying on that bed so that Jay could be the one squeezing his sister's hand. They deserved to have a break. They deserved to have a beautiful future together.
How dare Lord Ras hurt my family like this, Kai thought darkly, staring furiously at Jay's pale, pained features. Next time I see that stupid looking wolf face he will have hell to pay.
After a while, Zane emerged from the room with a grave expression on his face. Everyone waited anxiously for his prognosis.
"He's stable for now," Zane finally said. A collective exhale of breath was heard in the hallway. Zane shook his head, warning them their relief was unwarranted.
"I don't know how to help him," he said sadly, staring at the floor. "Lloyd told me he was hit by a spell. That's not something I know how to fix."
"So what do we do?" Cole asked desperately, his hands shaking slightly.
"There's not much we can do," Zane admitted somberly. "I can keep his vitals stable for now, but he's going to have to work through whatever's going on by himself."
"I hate this," Cole exploded, slamming his fist against the wall. "We just got him back!" Kai watched sadly as his friend stalked away. He knew that Jay was Cole's best friend. It used to kind of bother him before he realized that just because they were best friends, didn't mean they cared about him any less. Cole was usually a level headed person. But when Jay was involved, he became more hot headed than, well, the Master of Fire himself.
"We should take turns sitting next to him though," Zane continued, ignoring the interruption. "It might help him if he feels like he's not alone. I don't know how present he is in his current state, but it couldn't hurt." The team nodded quickly, eager for the opportunity to do anything that would make a difference.
"I'll sit by him first," Nya said quietly from beside Kai. Nobody argued. She rose shakily and walked into the med bay, sitting beside Jay's bed in a little folding chair that was nearby. She sat silently, watching the faint rise and fall of his chest. After a while, the rest of the team began to disperse. Nya didn't even notice. She gently reached for his limp hand, carefully avoiding tugging the various wires stuck into his wrist. She couldn't believe the idiot had jumped in front of a spell for her. Even with his memories wiped, with lies about her circling in his head, he still choose to sacrifice himself for her. She wished his beautiful eyes would open and he'd smile at her. He'd say "just kidding!" and she'd be mad at him until he said something stupid to make her laugh. But none of that happened. He remained stubbornly still, his silence unnerving. Jay never stopped talking. Ever.
"Say something idiot," she whispered, squeezing his hand. "I promise I'll never tell you to shut up again." His face remained deathly still. Nya couldn't do it anymore. She put her head on his chest and cried like a little girl. She hated crying, but lately it seemed like that was all she did. She hated herself for being weak. But how could she be strong when he was so close and yet further than he'd ever been? Nya had always known loving Jay was a weakness in their line of work. Something like this was bound to happen one day. One day their luck would run out. That's why she had built her walls so high, why it had taken so long for her to admit even to herself that she loved him. Now all she could think was how stupid she had been to not let him in sooner.
