LILAHS PAST (Before the maze)
She held his hand in hers, wishing on a stars. In hopes that he would soon be awake and they can go back to their normal lives. Where they play for hours on end, laughing til they lose their breath.
Toby was sick. He was always sick. It wasnt his fault and Lilah knew that. She reminded herseld that everyday. All she ever wanted was her brother to no lomger suffer.
"Lilah?" The boys dry voice woke her from her daydream. She squeezed his small hand, showing she was there for him.
"Oh, Toby," The girl almost cried out with an choke. Lilah placed her free hand on his forhead, creasing his face gently, "You scared me. Dont you ever do that again, Ok?"
Its not his fault she reminded herself.
The sick boy coughed before tangling his finger with hers, "I'm sorry. I cant help it. If only I wasbt sick, you wouldnt have to worry about me all the time," He was ashamed of himself. A coward he believed he was. Always making his older sister worrying. When she could be living her own life.
"No, no, dont aay that. None of this is your fault," Lilah leaned forward as she held his hand closer to her chest, "Listen to me, Toby. I need you to be strong. Not for me but for yourself. Can you do that? Can you keep fighting? Just a little bit more, I promise."
He nodded his head too weak to respond to his sister at the moment.
Lilah forced a smile to appear on her face. a mixture of anxiety and fear washing upon her, "Thank you. Thank you.." Her voice drifted as sadness laid over her shoulders. Was it wishful thinking? Was she in denial?
Before Lilah could continue her conversatiom wuth Toby, Doctor Ava Paige entered the closed off room and kimdly interupted them with two mocks at the entrance.
"May I speak with you Lilah? It'll only be for a few minutes," Lilah turnt to her brother and ran her finger threw his hair, messing it up, "Five minutes," She told Toby. He smiled weakly before she walkesd towards the doctor.
Lilah folded her arms and leaned onto one leg. The woman standing in front of her was calm and collected. Meanwhile, Lilah was the exact opposite. She mightve looked ok, but in reaity she was hurting. In so much pain, all she could do was hold the burden.
"What is it, Dr. Paige?"
The doctor frowned, "We can treat him. A few workera of mine have come up with an new treatment-"
"Really? Is it here now?" Lilah was quick to act and almost ran out the room in excitement. Dr. Paige held out her arm, preventing thw girl from leaving. Lilah looked at the woman confused.
"W-whats wrong? If we have a treatment, lets test it out now-"
"We would have to move your brother, Lilah." She felt her heart drop, "The treatment isnt in our hands. Its currently at another facility. The best thing to do is tranfering your brother there and when he is treated he'll come back."
"N-No," Lilah refused, "No!" She said more firmly. She wouldnt leave her brother. That was the last thing Lilah would do.
Tye doctor placed a soft hand on her shoulder, comforting the girl, "Is all we can do. Trust me Lilah if there was another way, I wouldnt be telling you this."
"He's not leaving! Not without me!" Tears fell from her swollen eyes, dripping down the side of her face. Pain controlling every thought.
"Lilah," The doctor softly spoke but Lilah wasbt listening nor making eye contact with the woman. Lilah stared at Toby. His pathetic state lying in that bed. For months now hes been in so much pain.
Every night Lilah trys to sooth his paim but it only get worse. Theres nothing she could do. And now that theres a way, Lilah hated herslef for not automatically agreeing. Was she being selfish?
"Lilah, look at me!" Ava paige suddely yelled, startling Lilah. She looked back the woman with a blurred vision, "You have to do this! Your brother needs this!" The doctor cleard her voice, "We cant help him...but they can. Ans they will."
Lilah let out a painful sob. She slouched her shoulders and her head dropped as she cried and cried. Ava Paige carefuly brought the girl into an embrace. The woman cared about Lilah more than she would know. Ava felt the need tonprotect her and keep safe. She always found her self smiling around the girl, enjoying every moment they spent together.
"I'm so sorry. I wish there was more that I coild do. Its okay, you have me. Dont ever forget that, Lilah."
Lilah sniffled, trying to gain back her strength for Toby. She needed too. If she wanted him to be strong, she had to show him how.
"I wont." Lilah whispered and squeezed the woman tighter, "No matter what happens, I will always be great ful for what you have done for my brother."
It was all a lie. There was no treatment. Toby wouldnt live to make it to the other facility because it didnt exist and Cranks would attack. WICKED used Toby as bait. He would help them get a closer look. He was apart of their little expirement.
DONT GET IT WRONG. Ava Paige cared for Lilah deeply. A little too much. The doctor began to feel that Toby was holding his sister back, back from her true potential. And with him gone. Lilah would find a cure and the world would be saved.
Thats how it was supposed to end. Ava Paige made it to end that way. She planned ever step and took it while leading Lilah towards it, blindly.
A Month Later.
"Whats wrong Teresa?" Lilah placed right hand on Teresa shoulder and waites for the girl to say something. Say anything.
Teresa looked up through her lashes with guilt written on her face. Her eyes fluttered, glistened with moisture, wrinkles crinkled alomg her forehead and around her eyes.
"I though I could do it." She vaguelt said as her bottom lip curved, "I-I promised. But there was nothing I could do," She cried, "Im so sorry."
"W-What are you talking about?"
Nothing.
"Teresa," Lilah firmlt said, " What are you talking about?" She repeated.
Teresa swallowed dryly before speaking once again.
"He's gone."
Lilahs stern gaze dropped and her eyebrows relaxed. She parted her lips to speak but nothing was coming out. In that moment her whole world turned up side down, dragging herslef alomg with it.
"I tried. I really did try...Theres no cure. We were too late."
Tears ran down Lilahs face. Tobys dead. Memories of Toby and her flashed through her mind. Happy ones. The first time she taught him how to read, write, talk. All the times they played silly games to occupy...
Eveeytimw he cried and begged when Lilah had to leave. Leave him. The look of desperatiom on his face to keep Lilah close. Guilt. So much guilt. Watching him lay in bed. Sick out of his mind. His weak body.
"I-I have to go," Lilah ran out of the room and rushed over to Ava Paige. She needed comfort. And the only person she had now was Ava. The woman who could mend this broken heart.
