Maya and Leah were in the lobby of the Lensbury resort, talking to distinct groups, casually glancing at each other from time to time, because they found each other too beautiful to look away from for more than five minutes.
From the distance that separated the two girls, no one could tell they were in love with each other.
They were both trying to figure out if the other liked them back, while pretending to be normal to maintain the beautiful friendship that they had created.
31st of July 2022 was the day.
The euros final. The day they could make their country proud and bring it home.
It was now 3pm and most people didn't get a good night of sleep because the blinds kept going up and down.
As a team, they knew they were going to do the best they could. They were really prepared and going to play with confidence and bravery.
It wasn't going to be easy, but they were going to win. Just like Sarina said earlier in the morning training, "We don't have to win. We want to win".
Once everybody was ready, they walked out of the hotel to the coach. There were a lot of fans outside cheering for them.
Maya, walking right behind Leah and next to Lotte, said hi to as many as she could before getting on the coach and seating with the two girls plus Beth.
They were all feeling the pressure, but it didn't matter to them. They didn't pay attention to what the media or what people were saying about them.
Forty minutes later they arrived at Wembley. It was cloudy and slightly windy - typical London weather.
They said hi to some fans, signed some shirts and took a couple of photos. It was now 4pm. One hour until the game.
They went into the dressing room and put down their bags. They had 10 free minutes until they had to be back in.
Maya decided to go see her parents. Nothing could ruin her mood: she was too happy and too stressed to even care.
"Maya!" her father said, giving the girl a big hug in the family area.
"Hi" Maya said, smiling. She let go of the hug and looked at her mother hesitantly. Were they good?
"I don't get a hug?" Maria asked her daughter with a welcoming smile. Maya returned the gesture and hugged her mother. "We're so proud of you!"
That's it? Typical. Just pretend like nothing happened. "Thank you" Maya said. She looked to her side and saw Leah, already looking at her.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Then she gestured to Maya to come over. "Just a second" Maya excused herself and went over to Leah's family. She talked to her grandmother, and she really liked Maya. Great for marriage.
Marriage? No thinking of Leah like that today, for God's sake.
When Leah's watch beeped, the 10 minutes had passed, and they had to go back. Maya looked over at her parents to gesture that she had to go, but Maria was quicker to gesture that they wanted to meet Leah.
Maya interlocked her arm with Leah's and told her "My parents wanna meet you, get ready for it", while giving her a sorry smile.
"Mom, dad, this is Leah" Maya said, awkwardly, letting go of Leah's arm. "Leah, you know them"
"Hi, nice to meet you" Leah said politely, smiling.
"You are the closest I'll ever be to the Royal Family" Maya's dad joked while shaking hands.
