12. Ugh! Speed Stingers

"Oh, for Thor's sake." My brother muttered. Toothless growled at the short Viking.

Hiccup and I both walked to the edge of the cliff and looked down. "What are you two planning on doing here?" Astrid asked.

"Jumping." I smiled widely.

"Unless someone has a better idea." Hiccup added.

Astrid groaned and facepalmed. "Ugh! Haddocks."

"Hey!" I said in offence.

"Guys, relax!" Hiccup looked at the rest of the Dragon Riders. "Feel that updraft? That's why I chose this place. It'll pick up our wings and We'll both be floating on a bed of air."

He pulled the lever on his flight suit, but one of the wings didn't fully expand. He fixed it quickly. I pulled on my lever, luckily mine worked fine.

"Or crashing on a bed of rock." Snotlout said after seeing what happened with Hiccup's wing. My brother grunted.

"Okay, everyone." Hiccup changed his tone to a happy one. "Dragon Fly One, maiden flight." We both jumped off the cliff. The two of us floated for a few second before we started to fall. I screamed. "Talulahh!" I heard Astrid's voice.

I felt Sapphire grab me and wrap me up in her wings. A cold sensation went through my body when we hit the water.

We came back to the same cliff a little while later. "So... we made a few tweaks." Hiccup smiled sheepishly. "Now, behold some serious flying."

I nodded my head helpfully before we both jumped off the cliff once more. "Yeah, baby!" My brother exclaimed.

"Whoo-hoo!" I laughed out.

Then we fell.

Our dragons saved us again. But we also fell in the water. Again.

"This time, I absolutely know where we went wrong. You see, it's all in the timing. I judged the updrafts wrong. We both assure you, we definitely have it now." Hiccup explained for the third time.

Toothless growled disapprovingly and Sapphire nudged me. "Toothless, Saph, don't worry. We'll be fine." I reassured.

Wind started to blow and Hiccup smiled. "S-see? There it is. Okay, now!" We both jumped on his command.

We fell until we almost hit the water, this time our wings clicked and we started to fly. My brother looked down, "We're flying? We're flying!"

"Yeah, we are!" I agreed. "Woah!" I had to push off a rock to avoid hitting it.

"Okay, right turn. Right turn." Hiccup muttered.

"How in Odin's Ghost do you do that?" I asked.

"Uh, we might have to work on the steering a little bit." My brother chuckled nervously.

"Might?" We were about to crash into a wall of rocks.

"Toothless!" He screamed.

"Sapphire!" I yelled.

I heard the familiar roar of a Night Fury and the loud wing flaps of a Death Song. What would I do without them? Well, I'd probably be dead.

I drew closer to the hard rock wall that could be the death of me. Then I felt Sapphire's wings. She held me tightly as we plummeted towards the water.

The cold of the river sent a shiver down my spine. I squeezed my eyes shut until I felt Saph let go of me. I crawled onto the hot shore, which was actually just made of more rock. Why did we choose a place with so many rocks?
