“So where are you taking me?” Jungwon asks after he’s fastened his seatbelt.

Jay looks up from where he’s been fiddling with the radio. “I said it was a surprise, didn’t I? You’ll see when we get there.” He presses a button and some soft KRnB song starts filtering through the car speakers.

Jungwon pouts, almost unintentionally. “I don’t like surprises,” he says.

Jay just shrugs and shoots him a small smile. “I think you’ll like this one.”

They drive for about twenty minutes, filling the time with small talk about their days, what music they’ve been listening to recently, and what their family and friends are up to. It’s nice—Jay’s easy to talk to and when Jungwon speaks, he leans forward and nods attentively, like he’s hanging onto every word. Jungwon doesn’t ask the unspoken question of whether this is a date or not, and Jay also seems content to let it hang in the air.

When Jay finally pulls the car next to a curb in front of a a dingy sign that reads “PARK” in fading letters, Jungwon raises a brow.

“You took me to a park? Really?”

Jay unfastens his seatbelt and steps out of the car. Jungwon does the same. “Have some faith. I know it looks dingy but I know a spot.” He opens the trunk and pulls out a large basket and a picnic cloth. “Hope you like picnics.”

Jungwon can’t help but just stare because Jay Park took him to a park so that they could go on a picnic? That’s… unexpected.

At Jungwon’s lack of reaction, Jay nervously fidgets with his coat sleeve. “Do you not wanna do it? If you don’t, it’s okay,” he rushes to say. “I just thought you would like it.”

“No, no, it’s totally fine,” Jungwon assured him. “I was just caught off guard. You don’t seem like the type of guy to go on picnics, you know?”

Jay smiles. “I’m full of surprises, I guess.”

The two walk into the park side by side. There’s a swing set and a slightly tilted slide off to one corner, both marred with patches of rust and dark brown where the wood peeks through the peeling paint. On the other side, there’s a thin path that leads into the trees. Jay starts in that direction, and the two walk on the path for a while.
