The whole fucking world went to shit the summer after Mattheo Riddle's fourth year. Voldemort returning was worse than mommy dearest escaping from Azkaban. In two short years he'd gone from running his own life to suffocating under his 'parents' insanity, from freedom to familial captivity. September first came like rain in a drought. Hogwarts would be a fucking oasis compared to the shit show spending the summer with people who were family only by blood at the place he now had to call home.

"I never thought I'd say this, but thank fuck summer is over," Mattheo said, taking a drag from his cigarette. He leaned back against the ancient entryway door he'd propped open, watching the students flowing in and out of the great hall for breakfast.

"Welcome to the club. I've been saying that for five years now," Theo said, picking lint off his school robes. "School is much more tolerable than spending time with family."

"You might reconsider once you see our schedules," Enzo said, handing them their timetables for the year.

"Four classes with Gryffindor? For fucks sake," Theo groaned, scanning his timetable.

"Only two with Hufflepuff?" Mattheo muttered, a cloud of smoke billowing out of his mouth.

"But one of the two is double potions, so there's that," Enzo pointed to Mattheo's schedule.

"Are you still on about her?" Theo asked. "You've never even had a proper conversation with her."

"Yet," Enzo added. "He has two classes this year to rectify that."

"He's had two years to rectify it."

"Yeah, but she had a boyfriend last year, so that one doesn't really count," Enzo said.

"What do you mean she had a boyfriend?" Mattheo cut in.

"Claire broke it off with him at the beginning of the summer."

"Why didn't you lead with that?!" Mattheo demanded.

"You mean as her personal stalker, you didn't know?" Theo laughed, turning to Enzo. "How do you know that?"

"And are you certain?" Mattheo added.

"Shannon and I spent some...time together this summer. She mentioned it." Enzo smirked. "Can't get much more certain than directly from one of her best mates."

"Fantastic. Now you can fuck her and get her out of your system," Theo said.

"Technically, he could have fucked her before. A girl having a boyfriend never stopped him."

"Yeah, but it probably would have stopped her," Theo said. "She doesn't seem like the cheating type."

"I'm not going to just fuck her and forget her," Mattheo finally interrupted the two, tossing his cigarette on the ground. "I'm going to make her mine."

"So, are you and Enzo a thing now?" Claire asked, stirring sugar into her tea before taking a sip.

Shannon shook her head as she finished chewing her piece of toast.

"No. We just had some fun during a boring summer. When you abandoned me for an Italian beach, I had to find someway to pass the time."

"Is it going to be awkward when you see each other?"

"It was sex, Claire, not a relationship. No feelings or messy breakup means no awkwardness."

"Okay, just making sure. I've never had one without the other so I wasn't sure."

"Maybe you should try it. Sex with no strings is kind of fun," Shannon smirked at her.
