Mattheo reclined on one of the green velvet armchairs by the fire in the Slytherin common room. His heart still thudded in his chest and it wasn't from the thrill of almost getting caught after Claire and he broke into Madame Pomfrey's office. It was from when they hid in that tiny alcove together, barely inches separating them.
"You were that close to her, and she was staring at your lips, and you didn't kiss her?" Theo asked incredulously, making Mattheo regret telling him and Enzo the details of what happened after Claire and him left the hospital wing.
"It wasn't the right time. I told you, I don't want to just mess around with her. I want to make her mine." He wasn't going to screw that up by making a move too soon.
"That's kind of hard to do when she doesn't even know you like her," Enzo said.
"I'm trying," Mattheo forced out. "But she's either immune to flirting, or just too oblivious to notice."
"Maybe you just need to be a little more...obvious with your flirting," Enzo suggested.
"Or maybe she's not interested," Theo said. Mattheo never should have told him anything.
"If she wasn't interested then why was she staring at his lips?" Enzo asked, coming to his defense.
"If she's interested, why didn't she just kiss him?" Theo countered.
"Because girls want the guy to make the first move," Enzo said, making Theo turn to Mattheo with a deadpanned look.
"You should have kissed her."
"It wasn't the right time!"
"For the love of Merlin," Theo grumbled. "Stop being a coward—"
"I'm not a coward." Mattheo's voice and eyes darkened, warning Theo to tread carefully with his next words.
"Dial it back a bit, mate," Enzo said, glancing between the two. Mattheo wasn't sure if his words were for him or Theo.
"Just tell her you fancy her, Mattheo," Theo sighed.
It was just Mattheo's luck that Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy were passing through the common room and heard Theo's words.
"Oh ho, do you actually fancy someone, cousin?" Malfoy asked with a smirk, stopping in front of the fire. "Who is it?"
"I don't need you chiming in. Theo's being discouraging enough." He didn't need the two of them joining in a pessimistic tag team.
"Don't tell me it's that pathetic little Hufflepuff," Pansy sneered, her nose wrinkling.
Mattheo narrowed his eyes. He might not care about her opinion, but he wasn't going to let her talk bad about Claire. Theo spoke before he could rebuke her.
"You mean that 'pathetic' Hufflepuff who put you in your place at breakfast last weekend?" Theo asked, coming to Claire's defense despite doing the opposite moments before. It's not that he didn't like Claire, she was actually really nice, he just didn't want to feed Mattheo's obsession when they didn't know if she would reciprocate his feelings.
"Campbell? From the newspaper?" Draco asked, his brows furrowed. He didn't know much else about her other than that and she was pretty. As for her blood status, he wasn't sure. She certainly wasn't a pure-blood. "Is that why you joined the school paper, Mattheo?"
"It's late, I'm going to bed," Mattheo said, rising from the chair and leaving the room and the conversation behind him. He wanted to end the night on a hopeful note and that wasn't likely if he stayed in the common room.
...
Claire was the first of her dormmates to wake up the next morning. Tiptoeing across the floor, careful not to step on the squeaky floorboard by the stove that heated the room, she made it to the hall without waking anyone. Exiting the common room, the halls were unusually silent. An almost eerie kind of silence when she stood in the dimly lit hall of the basement. She could have used this quiet time to tackle the mountain of homework she had, but she also wanted to properly thank Mattheo for sticking his neck out to help her last night. And there was only one way she could think of to thank him. Turning right, she walked to the portrait of the fruit at the end of the hall, tickled the pear to reveal the kitchen door, and stepped into the room that felt the most like home to her at Hogwarts.
