"So, how'd it go?" Lorenzo asked as they headed back to the common room for their break.
"It's a start," Mattheo said, focusing on the parchment in his hand.
"Is that Claire's schedule?" Theo asked, peering over Mattheo's shoulder.
"I copied it when she returned our potions ingredients." How else was he supposed to know where she was so he could accidentally bump into her.
"You really are a stalker," Theo laughed, nudging his shoulder against Matteo's.
"What am I supposed to do? Rely on coincidence? We only have two classes together. And I have a lot of ground to cover."
"Literally," Enzo said, motioning toward the schedule. "You'll have to take the long way to most of your classes if you're planning on running into her."
"It's a lot of work for a girl," Theo added.
"She's worth it." Mattheo glanced down at the schedule again, his attention turning towards the last block on Friday.
"I know that look," Enzo said. "You're planning something."
"I think I need to beef up my extracurriculars." He flicked the parchment where he'd hurriedly recorded the time of the first newspaper meeting.
...
The first week of classes seemed much more intense now that they were in their OWL year. Every professor mentioned the exam and how important it was in their first class. Well, except for DADA. Umbridge downplayed the importance of learning practical magic in favor of learning through the osmosis of reading. Claire was all for reading but reading didn't naturally produce practical results. If that were the case, squibs and muggles would both be able to do magic.
"Honestly, we'd be better off teaching ourselves," Claire whispered to Shannon as they left the class.
"If only OWLs were last year. We'd do better with fake Madeye," she agreed.
"Yeah. And when I fail, it's going to severely decrease my career options." Opening her satchel, Claire slipped the completely out of date DADA book inside and in the process ended up colliding with another student.
Glancing up, her eyes locked with Mattheo's. His hand was on her elbow, steadying her after their collision, and he swiftly moved them to the side of the hall so they weren't in the way of foot traffic. Shannon followed suit after the throng of students that separated her from Claire and Mattheo passed.
"I'm so sorry," Claire said.
"No apology necessary," he assured her.
"Is Enzo with you?" Shannon asked, glancing up and down the hall. Her inquiry had Claire smiling. Shannon could deny it all she wanted, but Claire knew when her best friend had a crush.
"No, but I'll let him know you say hello," he said, sharing a look with Claire that let her know he also suspected Shannon might be infatuated with Enzo. "Where are you ladies headed?"
"Out to the greenhouses for Herbology."
"I'll walk with you."
He pulled her bag from her shoulder before she could refute. And once the weight of it was gone, her strap no longer digging into her shoulder, she didn't really want to. If he wanted to lug both of their textbooks all the way down to the greenhouses, she wasn't going to stop him.
"What do you have in here? Rocks?" he asked after sliding the strap over his shoulder.
"She afraid of being late to class, so she carries all her books around instead of stopping by the common room to exchange them," Shannon said.
