Shadow stared intently at the motionless figure sprawled on the ground, a chill of confusion rippling through him. The once-vibrant air felt heavy, thick with the weight of the moment. He glanced over at Sonic, who mirrored his bewildered expression, eyes wide and searching for answers.

Turning back, Shadow scrutinized his sleek black gun, now seemed eerily silent. The firing mechanism was strangely void of a bullet. The gravity of the situation pressed down on them both, leaving an unsettling silence.

What the hell...

Just as the tension hung in the air, the abrupt sound of hastening footsteps echoed through the doorway, drawing their attention. Suddenly, armed soldiers burst into the room, firearms raised and aimed squarely at the two hedgehogs.

Shadow tightened his hold on Sonic, his knuckles whitening as he recognized the ominous insignia emblazoned on the soldiers' uniforms—a mark of authority that sent a chill down his spine.

Gritting his teeth, he braced himself for the confrontation, his heart racing as he heard one of the soldiers begin to bark orders, the harsh tone cutting through the thick atmosphere like a knife.

"Get on the ground now!"

Shadow growled

"Like hell, I will... you're gonna have to force me to" Sonic's ears pinned out of fear as another tightened the grip on his gun

"I will only say this one more time... drop the gun, and get on the ground!" Shadow gritted his teeth and held onto Sonic gently with one hand and the other cocked his gun as his eyes lit

"Make me" And before anyone did anything Shadow heard Rouge's voice

"Hey! Stand down... there not a threat!" She glared towards them as Shadow eased down but kept his guard up

"Rouge, why the hell are G.U.N here?!" Shadow put his firearm away as she held a hand to her hip

"Long story, I'll tell you.. just not here" She whispered that last part as hearing another man speak:

"You heard Agent Rouge, let's move out! And get what we came for!" The men left the other three there as Rouge turned to face them

"Now that G.U.N is taking over, let's get out of here— Knuckles and the others are waiting for us" Shadow sighed as he kept his hand steadying Sonic's balance and the other pulling out his chaos emerald as Rouge grabbed his shoulder

"CHAOS CONTROL!"

The three were outside, Tails was the first to run to Sonic but was instantly stopped by Shadow

"Hold up, Miles.. we need to get Sonic to a hospital first"

Shadow carefully tucked the radiant chaos emerald back into the spiky quills on his head, its polished surface glinting faintly in the light.

He then gently scooped Sonic up into his arms, cradling him in a bridal carry. As he glanced over his shoulder, he caught Tails' gaze, which held a hint of sadness mixed with understanding.
