The alarms blared louder, an endless wail of destruction and death.
Y/N's pulse pounded in her ears as she ran, her breath coming in sharp gasps. Maria and Shadow were right beside her, their footsteps echoing against the cold metal floor of the ARK's crumbling halls. The distant shouts of soldiers grew closer. The walls trembled with explosions.
They had seconds—maybe even less.
"Damn!" Maria shouted.
Y/N snapped her head up, spotting the stasis pods just ahead. The sleek silver capsules stood in a row, doors open and waiting.
horror surged through her chest.
They wouldn't make it. They couldn't get out.
Shadow grabbed Maria's wrist, practically dragging her forward. "Come on, we—"
Maria suddenly yanked herself free, hearing soldiers coming down the hallway. She hoped that maybe if she could get Shadow into one of the stasis pods he at least wouldn't be killed.
Y/N barely had time to register it before Maria shoved Shadow into one of the stasis pods.
He stumbled back, eyes going wide. "Maria—?!"
Before he could react, Maria's hand slammed against the control panel.
The pod door sealed shut.
Shadow's fists pounded against the glass. "Maria! No!"
His voice was muffled, distorted behind the thick material. He pressed his hands against the barrier, his red eyes wild with panic.
Maria's own eyes glistened, but her hands didn't waver.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Then she pressed the launch button.
"Maria!"
Y/N could only watch in horror as the pod activated, liquid beginning to pool around his feet- eventually filling all the way up and forcing him into sleep.
And then—
Shadow was gone.
Torn from them in an instant.
Y/N stared, her breath caught in her throat. A scream built up inside her, but it wouldn't come out.
Maria turned to her, her expression filled with an aching sadness.
"You have to go too," she said softly.
Y/N barely heard her. Her heart was pounding too fast, her body locked in place.
"No," she rasped, shaking her head violently. "No. I'm not leaving you."
Maria reached for her hand, her grip surprisingly steady despite the tremble in her fingers.
