The rest of the day was a blur of half-hearted lessons and endless messing aroundDefense Against the Dark Arts was the first to go off the rails. Theo spent the majority of the class trying to discreetly flick bits of parchment at Mattheo, missing every single time, which only made it funnier. At one point, Mattheo retaliated by charming Theo's quill to write "I am an idiot" over and over again on his parchment. Theo didn't notice until halfway through class. When he did, he shot Mattheo a glare that promised revenge.
By Potions, the two of them had fully committed to making the day as unproductive as possible. We were supposed to be brewing something important—Snape had emphasized that several times—but instead, Theo kept nudging me, whispering stupid things just to see if he could make me laugh. Meanwhile, Mattheo spent the entire time "helping" by adding random ingredients into Blaise's potion. Blaise nearly lost it when his cauldron started producing pink smoke.
"Are you trying to get us all killed?" Blaise hissed, glaring at Mattheo.
Mattheo just smirked, stirring the potion lazily. "Relax, Blaise. A little excitement never hurt anyone."
It was a miracle we made it to lunch without detention.
By the time Charms rolled around, I'd pretty much given up on actually learning anything. Theo kept leaning over to poke at my notes with his wand, making little scribbles appear in the margins—half of them were doodles, the other half were very questionable jokes. Mattheo, on the other hand, spent most of the lesson flicking his wand at Draco's quill, charming it to float just out of reach every time Draco tried to grab it. Draco looked about five seconds away from hexing him.
By the end of the day, my sides hurt from laughing.
As the day wound down, we all collapsed into the Slytherin common room, the warmth of the fireplace casting flickering shadows against the stone walls. The usual buzz of conversation filled the space, but our little group had claimed the best spot—sprawled across the dark green couches near the fire.
Theo stretched out, his legs taking up half the couch as he leaned back with a satisfied sigh. "Alright, I'd say today was a solid success. No detentions, no explosions—well, almost no explosions—and a whole lot of wasted lesson time."
Mattheo smirked. "And we're only just getting started."
Pansy, curled up in one of the armchairs, raised an eyebrow. "You do remember there's a party tonight, don't you?"
At that, the energy in the room shifted. Blaise grinned, lounging lazily beside Theo. "How could we forget? Biggest party of the term. If you're not there, are you even a real Slytherin?"
I glanced between them, intrigued. "So what's the deal with this party, then? Just an excuse to drink and cause chaos?"
Draco smirked, shaking his head. "You say that like Slytherins need an excuse."
Theo turned to me, eyes glinting with mischief. "It's tradition. Start of the term, biggest party in the dungeons. No rules, no teachers, just a good time."
Mattheo nudged my knee with his. "You are coming, right?"
I scoffed. "Like I'd miss it."
Pansy smirked. "Good. Because if you didn't, we'd have to drag you there ourselves."
I shifted on the couch, glancing over at Mattheo. He was leaned back, twirling his wand between his fingers, that usual lazy smirk playing on his lips.
"Fancy a smoke?" I asked casually, keeping my voice low.
His smirk deepened as he met my gaze. "Thought you'd never ask."
Before either of us could move, Theo sat up, eyes lighting with interest. "Oh? We're smoking? Say less."
