The office corridor was quiet, filled only with the faint sound of distant typing and the soft click of polished shoes against the marble flooring.
Shaurya's grip on Mehul's hand was firm yet gentle, as if silently promising: I've got you.
Mehul clung to that warmth.
As they waited for the private elevator, Mehul glanced around. Everything was sleek-mirrors, lights, the faint scent of something expensive in the air. His village life felt like a distant dream now, as if he'd stepped into a movie and forgotten his lines.
The elevator doors slid open with a quiet chime.
They stepped in. Just the two of them.
Mehul looked up at the glowing numbers counting down, then peeked at their reflection in the elevator mirror.
His reflection... next to him.
Shaurya in his crisp suit, commanding without trying. And Mehul, in his simple kurta, wide-eyed and lost but holding the hand of a man who looked like he belonged to another world.
"Shaurya ji..." Mehul spoke softly, hesitating.
Shaurya looked down at him. "Hmm?"
Mehul licked his lips nervously. "Woh... aapke dost... mujhe ajeeb laga jab unhone kaha ki main... biwi hoon."
Shaurya exhaled a faint chuckle, resting his back against the elevator wall. "Mujhe pata tha Abeer kuch na kuch bol lega."
"Par main to sirf... ek samanya ladka hoon. Padhe-likhe bhi nahi. Aap jaise logon ke beech... main theek hoon na?"
Shaurya didn't answer right away.
He reached out, cupped Mehul's cheek with one hand, and turned him gently to face him fully.
"Tum jaise ho, Mehul... waise koi aur ho hi nahi sakta. Tum theek nahi-tum bahut ache ho."
Mehul's throat tightened. His eyes stung, but he blinked fast.
The elevator doors opened.
Shaurya pulled his hand away and stepped out first, making sure Mehul stayed close as they exited through the private garage. His car was already waiting-sleek black with tinted windows.
The driver opened the back door silently.
Once inside, Mehul settled near the window, the city lights flashing like stars on the road.
Shaurya didn't say anything for a while. He was busy scrolling through something on his phone, replying to emails, making quick work calls.
Mehul stared out, watching the city zoom past. There were people everywhere. Cars honking, neon boards blinking in languages he couldn't read.
He pressed his hand against the window glass.
Shaurya finally set his phone aside and looked at him. "Tum thak gaye ho?"
Mehul turned slightly. "Thoda. Par zyada sochne se zyada thakan ho rahi hai."
Shaurya gave a small, understanding nod. "Kya soch rahe ho?"
Mehul hesitated. "Yeh sab...kya mein sach me is sapne ke layak hu?"
Shaurya's expression softened.
